Very clean, excellent service, very good breakfast

The hotel is overall nice and the garden is very beautiful. Good breakfast, and the staff were exceptionally helpful, polite and welcoming. On the negative side, I was woken up in the middle of the night by very loud neighbours. The rooms are not well insulated. The lock on my door was also broken/missing, which left me wondering whether the door was actually locked.

I stayed in this hotel multiple times during winter and spring of 2026 when I was visiting the city for work (I tried many other hotels in this price range as well). I think Hotel Porta San Mamolo is one of the absolute best locations the city has to offer. It is a lovely building with a nice little garden and a beautiful/ rich italian breakfast. Especially, the breakfast/ kitchen staff are the nicest. Receptionists are knowledgeable, very professional and helpful. Bologna is a small italian town with not a lot hotels/ bnbs that really understand/ accustomed to handling professionals needs and they may cause small operational complications (no cards, etc.). This hotel has been the nicest place to stay for me by far!

The hotel has a free filtered water tap at the breakfast area which you could fill your own bottles from, the rooms are clean, comfy, spacious and have great Aircon. The staff are very helpful and friendly It’s a bit further out of the center of town, but still walkable. But a far walk from the train station

Breakfast and garden area

We chose Hotel Porta San Mamolo because it was located within the old city walls and has private parking. We were not disappointed. The hotel is only a short walk from the city centre which was busy in July with many activities and restaurants/bars to explore. We took an inner city small bus tour and walked to the national art gallery (pinoteca) in the university area which was very interesting. We particularly enjoyed the resaurant Osteria Le Mura right opposite the hotel! Access to the private parking is very tight but hotel staff handle the parking for you. The breakfast was actually good but the breakfast area was rather busy on the two days we stayed, making it feel crowded and noisy with handling of dishes as well. A minor point really, as our stay was in July!

The reviews over state the quaintness The walls have obvious water damage. There were no towels in the room on checkin. The front desk lecturers because no one was at front desk. After calling several times and going down no one was there so I knocked on the office door. The sheets barely covered the bed. The mattress was very hard, The best part was the orange tie not got the good bit for service was excellent, I would not stay here again. The room was unbearably hot and there was no hot water barely like warm in the shower which actually helped to go to bed wet as it was very hot in room.
