Atmosphere, staff friendliness, cleanliness, location. The best hostel I've ever stayed

EXTREMELY CLEAN hostel. Like I was honestly so shocked that a hostel can be this clean. You could walk barefoot into showers without slippers, because it was just that clean. There wasn’t nothing I disliked, maybe the only thing was not having access to rooftop after hours, sometimes we’d gather there and relax on the hammock. They’d give us an extra few minutes after midnight which was nice, but it would definitely be nice to have a rooftop with hammock that’s available for after hours if needed.

This really was a surprise as I am far over the hostel demographic. It was lovely, exceptionally clean and a real attention to respect and comfort. The staff was outstanding and helpful and it felt like a welcoming and safe place. Quiet hours politely enforced. Not a party hostel.

Location, clean and staff

I had a great time, the space is located in a very good location and the hostel itself is very well organised, clean and the staff is extremely friendly. The breakfast was great and everything was perfect! Would definitely come back again and stay in the same place.

This place is a pure gem! Hundreds of reviews already stated it, but I will repeat again the main points of why you should stay here: - Quiet policy from midnight till 8:00. - Wide and comfy beds with thick curtains for privacy. Bed's not shaking when your neighbour is getting upstairs to his bed. - Air conditioning in bedrooms at nights. - Shower and toilet are located in one room, so you get your privacy while using them. Never had to queue for it. - Exceptionally clean in every corner of the house! - Awesome rooftop with hammocks and shower under the stars. - Amazing staff, friendly and helpful, being there for you 24/7. (My special thanks to Bandi who made me a really nice welcome) - Delicious pancakes every morning from 9:30, cereals, milk and coffee/tea are available from 7:30. - Beautiful and cozy design, holding authentic vibe of an old Portuguese house. But the most incredible thing about Casa da Madalena is the unique atmosphere they are creating for people to connect, socialize and immediately become one big bunch of friends! It's a perfect opportunity for a solo traveller with no particular plans, like me. Believe me, just stay there, show up for breakfast or sunset viewing and then just go with the flow! Half of the people I met there changed their plans and prolonged their stay for 1-2 more nights. This is the most amazing experience I ever had! Highly recommend to stay here for 3+ night in order to fully feel the vibe. When I booked my stay I was thinking that the price is a bit high for a bunk bed in 8-bed mixed room. But this is the reason why they manage to maintain the place in such a good condition. My stay was really worth the price! (stayed there for a week)

Great staff, vintage hostel vibes and a great common room with space to drink, play cards and to eat the breakfast with great self made pancakes! Easy to talk to people and to get to know people as the staff is connecting the guests via introducing and proposing shared activities. It’s giving a feeling of a cozy home shared with others!

The best hostel I’ve ever stayed at! Staff were so lovely, and we just felt really welcome. Nothing really! The atmosphere was perfect.

The hostel was clean, comfortable, and had a welcoming atmosphere overall and it's in a good location close to town center and transport hubs. Decent rooftop to relax and pancake-breakfast together with the guests - great way to bond and get to know other. Comfy beds with curtains, 2 bedrooms 4 bathrooms, as of now, with 8 beds in each bedroom. They're doing an expansion. Constructive feedback to consider for the management. 1.Add a small shelve to the beds, around the charging plugs, especially if you're expanding your hostel now. 2. The New Year's Eve "dinner" was quite underwhelming. Serving garlic-oil spaghetti at a price comparable to a filling meal at a nearby restaurant (which would include a drink, too) left most guests disappointed, especially on such a special occasion. While we understand it's a hostel and needs to make money, but charging €15 per person for a simple pasta dish and some bread is excessive. Offering a more generous and satisfying meal would create a more festive and memorable experience for guests celebrating the end of the year. Anyhow, a funny story to tell to friends in the future. (Remark: Lots of nice food options nearby).

Pretty much everything. No microwave or oven in the kitchen, only stove for cooking.

Bandi, the best night receptionist, making coffee for those early risers
