ZEN Boutique Villa Hoi An

The hotel, as the name suggests, is very zen. The wooden architecture and facilities inside the room are very pleased to the eye. The bed is very comfy and it has a small swimming pool for you to unwind after a long day walking around the old town. The are is very quiet even though it is very near the old town. The staff were all friendly. The hotel has some rooms for you to learn about art/culture/history displaying objects collected by the owners, which is very nice. I would love to stay here again if I get the opportunity.

Nice pool and a large spacious room. Room could have been a little cleaner. Staff was very helpful but also felt like they were trying to sell to us. This was convenient but it also felt like they are trying to secure bookings for kickbacks. For us this was fine because we had a short amount of time, but just be aware. It’s the only hotel we’ve been at in Vietnam that has felt like this.

Our room was spacious, pretty, and clean - and we had a really delicious Vietnamese breakfast on our last day. Also, the wifi worked really well. Unfortunately, we would not stay here again. Every morning at 6.15 AM, we were woken up by the hotel owner who was practicing playing drums for at least one hour. When asking about this, we were told that it’s a religious ritual that has to be practiced that early in the morning. Also, we were not told that breakfast needs to be reserved and registered at the reception every day for the next morning, so when we arrived at the breakfast room on our first morning, we were told that we were not registered. At checkin, the employee just told us the times for breakfast and that it was included in our room rate, so we were quite surprised about this. We still got some food that day, but the way they treated us about it made us feel quite uncomfortable. Finally, we did not really like that we were offered lots of overpriced tours, activities, and private drivers with the constant emphasis that they would give us the best price when we could easily order much cheaper rides via Grab and also found cheaper tours and activities online. This last point really is no big deal though, it just added to the general feeling of not being welcome (since we didn’t take any of the offers), which made us even more uncomfortable. Lastly, although definitely not important, one employee made a quite inappropriate comment about my face that hurt a lot - but this may be just cultural differences.

Where to begin? The staff was really great, helpful in every situation. Bicycles were available for free, a bit long in the tooth, but perfectly fine for Hoi An, which is basically flat. The room was large with a small terrace facing a neighboring field. There is a truly wonderful little gem of a museum as part of the house, in a side wing. All the tools formerly and even now still used in rice farming, a collection of old Buddha statues and artful incense containers, a large bookshelf with Vietnamese often out of print books, a few memorabilia from the American War as it is called here and a few other antiques, all collected by the the family. It gives a completely different feel to the place, a step back in time once you enter this part. Really lovely. Breakfast was a choice between western and Asian/Vietnamese, plus coffee, juices and fruits, not fancy, but good and plenty. The location is within easy walking distance of the old town, with a couple of casual restaurants nearby. The mattress was rather soft and the outdoor furniture at the swimming pool was a bit out of date.

The property is peaceful and aesthetic. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had an enjoyable stay in Hoi An and even booked the Memories show for us, organised motorbike hire and a private car back to Da Nang. My husband and I are vegans and they made sure to supply a breakfast to suit out dietary needs. The location is a short walk from the centre of town, but it also means it was a more quiet stay which was good for sleeping. Nothing, it was lovely.

Of all our stays in Vietnam, ZEN Boutique Hoi An is the one I'd return to without hesitation. Zen by name, zen by nature - this place just gets everything right. The location strikes the perfect balance - close enough to walk into Hoi An's Ancient Town, yet when your legs are tired after a day of exploring, a Grab back is both easy and cheap. I'm a total cynic when it comes to hotel breakfasts, but ZEN completely changed my mind. It's à la carte rather than buffet, with both Western and Asian options executed perfectly. After my first morning's Western-style eggs, I was tempted to try the pho the following day - and I was hooked. It became a highlight of each morning. The staff were exceptional. Beyond the warm welcome, they provided genuinely useful tips and recommendations for exploring Hoi An and the surrounding area. They even found us an excellent driver/guide for the next leg of our journey up to Huế, which made a real difference to our trip. If you're visiting Hoi An, stay here. Simple as that. Nothing could be better apart from a few more nights :)

We had a wonderful stay at Zen Boutique. The room was spacious and breakfasts were delicious. It was the perfect place to relax after a day exploring. Huong was an incredible host and gave us recommendations for shops, restaurants, spas, and cooking classes. She helped arrange airport pickup as well. We borrowed the bikes and had easy access to bike paths around the vegetable gardens. Would definitely stay here again.
