the area is a bit dodgier than i expected - they're very clear about where to go and not to go, but it seemed that even the main stretch of Maboneng didn't have too much going on other than a few bars

Check out the neighborhood and then decide if you wanna book a room. However, it's been said that Johannesburg can be very dangerous no matter which district. I simply didn't want to walk on Fox Street.

First day no power when I arrived
-
The area is super dangerous I felt really unsafe and the bar becomes quite wild at night every time I would walk through there it was an odd local vibe I say this having traveled through a lot of South Africa and staying at local places This area is chaotic and I was scared to leave the hostel
-
The location and staff was great. Had everything I needed. The sunroof. I couldn't nap during the day because of the heat.
-
About the check out the staff sent me a message erlier asking me if I’d extend my stay because check out is before 10am.

Everyone everything

Rooms were good too. Room decor and showers are too cramped.

The location is red flagged! You will get warnings from everyone who cares about you to be super careful since the street is scanty. Also the place is not super quiet because of the clubs around but you can manage to catch sleep comfortably.

We found our luggage had been stolen from while inside a locked private room. After bringing this to the attention of staff they told us the footage had been deleted and several staff lied to us in the process. At the police station we learned this was a known problem for this property. Other guests need to be careful around the staff of this place.

Beware - Theft. While staying at Curiocity in a private room someone came in to our locked private room and stole every last bit of our money from hidden pockets in three different bags. We reported to staff but they said all the footage that showed the theft was deleted. Multiple staff members lied to us when dealing with the incident and didn’t help us at all. The owner then treated us very badly. I hate to write bad reviews but I want to warn fellow travelers about this place.

The location felt unsafe and the bar was very noisy.
-
Fun and cosy building. Great vibes from the street even though we were told not to leave that street on our own. Loud music until 2am. You make your breakfast yourself in a shared kitchen.
-
The bar area was a nice space to hang out in, even if you were not drinking. They also had a nice balcony to sit on overlooking the street. The entire staff was very hospitable. .
-
The surrounding area beyond fox street feels a little unsafe, and the nearby clubs are noisy well into the morning, this is not the fault of the backpackers obviously.

Nice balcony, good sized kitchen, near a couple bars and restaurants, staff was generally nice. "Hot tub" was cold, men's shower/toilet room door was constantly propped open, so if you took a shower in the first or second stall, people walking by could see you; was uncomfortable to use the toilet and shower area at times; only one toilet in men's room, and people smoked outside right by the door that leads to the pathway to the rooms - had to hold breath while walking by to not breath in smoke at times. Uber drivers all said they didn't like the area, but I felt fine in the area - but it's not an ideal place to just go walking into town from (you pretty much need to always take a taxi/Uber to go anywhere).

The reception, staff and amenities were good. Ease of access to the bus park using Bolt. Was received by a jovial staff, Nelisa.
-
Fun location, cool building Very loud music until 2am No free tea or coffee
-
Really clean hostel. Staff was OK. Good kitchen. The neighborhood is extremely dangerous, not sure why there’s even a hostel here.
