We can unplug and really relax. We enjoyed our 3 day trip. Everything was great

The location was very convenient. It has its own bus stop! It was very close to an easy waterfall hike. The scenery around the ryokan was beautiful. The private onsen was really nice as well because they didn't allow reservations. You have to understand what you are getting with a ryokan like this. Is it the nicest one? No, but that's OK! It's a retro place that is well maintained with wonderful staff and a great quiet place in nature. The rooms are a bit tired, but that's part of the retro vibe that you don't get in a lot of places in Japan anymore. Just embrace it and you're going to love it. There were a few spots of mold in a few places, especially the unit bath. Other than that no complaints here!

There was a lot to love about Kose Onsen. The setting was fantastic with trails nearby and ways to appreciate the seclusion. The private onsen was fantastic. For that matter, so was the public onsen. The meals were very good, particularly the dinners. The room was pleasant, and we especially loved the window that opens up out to the stream right outside of the room. Amazingly relaxing overall. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. These aren't so much things that I didn't like as things for others to consider. Getting to and from the property by bus took a little bit of planning. It wasn't super hard, but it took a little bit of extra thinking ahead as you have to be back at the property fairly early before you miss the last bus. For most people that travel by car, this probably isn't a big deal. Just something to consider if traveling by bus. The staff don't speak much to any English. Again, not a big deal and something that I know I am privileged to expect in non-English-speaking countries. But again just something to consider if this might be a turnoff.

A quiet retreat with a rich sense of history in the area. The rooms and furnishings beautifully reflect the charm of the past, featuring décor and facilities that preserve an authentic 1980s traditional Japanese Onsen style. Perfect for those who appreciate a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere.

2 onsen options - public indoor & private 露天風呂(outdoor rotenburo). I spent ~2h over multiple visits in the onsens (1 night stay) Water temperature (42 Celsius) was perfect, and left skin feeling great Friendly and polite staff Operates like a historic ryokan (i.e. call reminders for meals, setting up futon, etc) Quiet & good room size. Note: Yes, there's water damage/mildew, but it is an older ryokan. Decent for the price and authentic experience Location - car recommended. Bus is OK, but only walk friendly attraction is the ryugaeki falls. Access to Shiraito falls is cut off (Shinanoji trail damaged) Meals were a mix of western and Japanese (which felt weird). For example pesto sea bream.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Staff speak little english, so be prepared to use a translator. Onsen water is very good. Food is very nice, standard kaiseki meal. Breakfast is typical japanese breakfast. Private onsen is free of charge. Hotel easily accessible via bus. Check the schedule before time since the bus isnt 24 hours.

Private onsen was very nice. Building is in a beautiful natural setting quite far out of town. Busses stop running in the late afternoon. Uncomfortable bed; dated and shabby furnishings. VERY mediocre food - tasted like all the ingredients were past due. Kitchen staff kept insisting there was no spinach in the meal (my wife is allergic) in spite of us seeing spinach in the dish. No apologies, just didn't seem to care. We left a day early. By FAR the worst place we stayed in a month in Japan.

Service was pleasant It was the most expensive place that I stayed in while visiting Japan. Unfortunately, it was also of the lowest quality. The bathroom smelled bad, there were stains on the walls, a knob was missing from the cupboard, wooden chopsticks and worst of all, the air conditioner was broken.

It was a great experience but I expected more from the breakfast, although it was also good. The room was clean, the onsen was really nice. Very easy to get to the city with a bus.

Very traditional & small hot spring hotel in the mountain with nice view. The hot spring bathroom is quite small.

Very nice old style ryokan surrounded by nature. Very cozy private rotenburo. Nice japanese breakfast.
