The location was incredible. Views from the hotel entrance patio and our patio were beautiful and so peaceful....both sunrise and sunset. Breakfast was excellent with a wide assortment of sweet and savory treats and evening drinks on the patio were lovely. If you can handle A LOT of steps (many of them on cobblestone walkways) the walkability is really great. 10-20 min walk to great shops, sights and restaurants. We loved the rock churches. There's a wonderful boutique foodie shop on Piazza Vittorio Veneto 1/2 that was a favorite for oils, vinegar, jarred olives & sauces....and they ship. There's also a water fountain near the hotel entrance to fill up and cool down on the way out and the way back in. Front desk staff was very kind and helpful. A delightful stay. We specifically sought and paid for a room with a patio and we had a patio, but it could have been so much better. It was stark. There was only a bistro table and chairs. It was large and should have had an umbrella, lounge chairs, beautiful large potted plants & flowers ---- the kind of place we could start and end our day enjoying the beautiful views from our own room patio. Like other patios we saw when we walked all over Matera.

Wonderful staff and location. Views across the Sassi in the day are beautiful and at night, stunning! Great breakfast and even better outdoor seating to watch the town go by in the evening. Would highly recommend a night here. Waking up and stepping outside for the view is amazing. We stayed in a cave room which is such a cool experience. With that, brings a lot of moisture! All of our stuff was damp by the next morning, which we dried out but 1 night in a cave room is enough for me.

    Great!

Even if you get lost in Matera, and you will, the hotel sassy is in the center of everything and you will eventually find it. And when you do, you’ll feel at home. This is not a new hotel. Thank goodness. It’s got character. Maybe a few rough edges. Nothing to be too concerned about. You’ll go up and down. You might sit on a plastic chair. But the beds are comfortable. The views are to die for. And the people are stupendous. They were kind, helpful, excellent restaurant recommendations. The owner actually smiles and shakes your hand. Book it.

It was beautiful to see the see. Very nice location. Difficult to get there. Big suitcases not recommended. The transfer service gets you closer which is nice but it takes a little bit to get your suitcases down. Carrying is recommended. The balcony was wonderful. Going down for the bathroom was uncomfortable but doable. The bathroom downstairs. But my personal preference. It was neat staying there

Matera is an amazing historical place to see! We enjoyed our stay for 2 nights. We were in a villa with a loft in the lower part of the villa complex. The room was large, mostly clean (a little extra dusting in the corners recommended) and comfortable but without a view. There are so many incredible views outside of the room, we didn’t feel the extra money was worth it. Breakfast was adequate with good coffee. Staff were helpful and friendly. The location is ideal for exploring the Sassis and excellent dining in close proximity.

We loved the location, inside the old UNESCO-Heritage designation. We walked everywhere, within the old city. Also the friendliness, helpfulness of the staff. We came during the January off-season, so breakfast diversity varied with the number of guests, but was generally excellent. and crowds were minimal. Filtered water was available all the time. Our room was hollowed out into the rock, with a spectacular view if we climbed to the sitting area. Every room was different because of the unique topography. We're seniors, and recommend a walking stick for the marvelous cobbles and slippery-if-wet stones. No complaints - ZERO. We stored our car in a nearby pay-garage as recommended. Directions to drop off luggage were provided; a hotel colleague did meet us to help navigate and carry, and then we dropped the car. Confusing at first, but clear once we had telephoned the hotel and gotten encouragement. Total experience rates a full 5-stars.

I liked the location, I had a room right in the heart of Matera cave dwellings and the view from the windows on an evening Matera glowing with lights were magical. Staff were helpful and gave me a free map of navigating around and made some hot tea (after a long walk around on a chilly night it is truly appreciated). It had comfy lights around the room, and a good radiator next to a bed to make the room temperature pleasant. Checkout was quick, maybe because I was in rush for my bus, I've just submitted the keys. In short, it is pricey, and I don't think is worth the price (around $90 USD with city tax as of December 2025). The room while was maintained and had plenty of clean towels and a seemingly fresh bedding, somehow had a single slipper (not mine!) left underneath my bed. Also somewhere around the corners it wasn't clean enough. But the biggest setback was when I entered the room - it turned out to look differently from the original one I booked 3-5 weeks before, even though it had all the facilities listed there. And then once I checked with my booking, the pictures there were changed as well. The walls were different and it looked more like a normal room rather than a Sassi cave (which I signed up for). Also, my room had 3 large full-sized mirrors (one on the wall facing the door, and two embedded into the bathroom door (on both sides) with one facing the bed, which made me wonder why so many in a small room like mine. That's not a complaint, just something a cautious traveller takes a note of. Also, the minibar was not free, and I paid for a beer on my checkout, but it is okay. Last but not least, there were no iternal locks on the doors, which is important for solo female travellers staying in single rooms somewhere at the top of Matera cave dwellings.

Fantastic staff. Spacious room . Great view from our room. It is one of a kind experience within a UNESCO world heritage site. All good

  • Engine customer Oct 2025

Very friendly staff, beautiful views, tasty melon and pineapple for breakfast, peaceful area Although we booked a room with queen bed we got linked twin beds, and they were separating during the night. The room was very clean, but they used too much chlorine and we had to go for a long walk to let the room air out. I understand it may be obligatory to keep the limestone caves in good condition, just let the staff know to open the windows before You check-in.

Great location beautiful views and room

  • Engine customer Sep 2025

I think this hotel is the best choice for staying in Sassi Matera. It has the best location and the most beautiful view. We were able to walk everywhere in the old city, and from our room we had an amazing view. Breakfast was also excellent.”

  • Engine customer Sep 2025

The views. The room was very spartan and small but it was fine and very clean. However it was really poorly isolated. The door to the small terrace didn’t properly closed and allowed cold and much noise to enter in the night. There were no blankets and we had to use the bathroom towels over the bed as it was quite chilli (september). But the worst was a running motor somewhere below the room which was all night running and which made sleeping impossible. Noise and bad isolation
