Ryokan Dougoya

Blaring billboard out the window which kept me up until after 2am.

Too many rules. It made it hard to relax fully

The staff is great. Gen was very welcoming, communicated expectations via writing and orally clearly and was available for any questions we had. It is very well connected to the onsens in the area making it easy to go to dinner and then to the baths right after. All was ok.

We ended up staying here twice during our holiday. We needed to have a place to stay before flying out and booking here again was a no brainer vis a vis the price / quality. Read the instructions and expectations of the amenities before you go so you know what to expect. This is not the usual hotel. Go to the public baths in the area to make the most out of it. All ok.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Accommodations were beautiful and clean. We booked time in the shared onsen and it was a lovely way to relax and enjoy the famous onsen water without the crowds in town. Shared bathrooms. I felt a bit odd about the fact the staff checked the room before we left. Like they didn’t trust us not to break things

A truly special place with beautiful traditional charm. Hisa-san's and Gen-san's warm hospitality made us feel very welcome and well cared for. The little private onsen is nice, and the famous onsens of Matsuyama are within walking distance, and we got great recommendations for restaurants nearby. We enjoyed our stay here very much. Dougoya is surrounded by large hotels with noisy ventilation systems running through the night, but honestly, our experience at this place was so lovely, one could overlook that fact.

Private hot spring was nice. Also nice conversations with staff. We would have appreciated food being served.

I liked the whole experience. The location, setting, staff and food was wonderful. It made our stay in Matsuyama very memorable.

Good

Traditional Japanese room. Great family size, near to Dougo onsen We have a big family room but was too cold during winter. We had to snuggle in the kotatsu even sleeping. Otherwise it was good place

Exceptional

The proprietor Hisa-san takes good care with many details at his old Japanese style inn. It is attractive and comfortable. Probably we wouldn't have bothered with the private bath option. There are many public baths around the city and it might have been more interesting (and better value) to do that instead.

Very friendly staff and a beautiful place to stay. The onsen was fabulous, especially having been cycling for the day. Breakfast the next day was excellent!

Great location just steps away from all three of the public bathhouses. A fun vibe, cool decoration within, and friendly staff that are fully fluent in English. Highly recommend if travelling alone or in a small group to Matsuyama.

The breakfast was excellent! We had some special requests regarding the food, and fortunately, our host was very accommodating.

I loved how authentic it was. It really made me feel like I was getting the authentic Japan experience. The owner was really amazing as well!

Very nice old building with a lot of cool art. Great location very close to the Dougo-onsen. Tasty breakfast with seasonal ingredients.
