The location. It is directly opposite the the main beach area in Doese in which the Strandhaus is located. The latter is a large restaurant bar facility serving excellent wholesome local food at tables on a lawned area outside which gives way to a man-made beach. The beach kept clean and is good for sunbathing and other recreational activities but the opportunity for sea bathing is practically nil as the marine environment is mainly mudflats which stretch miles into the sea and seem to be contaminated with an oily residue which sticks to skin and clothing and is difficult to remove. Having said that there were many other opportunities for recreation such as cycling, crazy golf, and a large Lido on the nearby beach of Duhnen. As most people, both holidaymakers and residents, spoke little English it was a great place to practice our German. Not being able to swim on the beach. Most of the time the tide is way out over the mud flats, which were not pleasant to walk on due to the oily residue referred to above. It seems this may be due to cargo discharged from the many paraffin tankers that come and go from Hamburg.
