Beijing Shichahai Shadow Art Performance Courtyard

The complimentary shadow art performance for hotel guests was fantastic. The hotel is located in the heart of the hutong alleys, giving you an authentic experience of living among the locals. The entire staff was amazing—professional, extremely warm, polite, welcoming, and accommodating. The room I was assigned exceeded my expectations. As other reviews have indicated, the hotel’s location deep within the hutong alleys means that many taxis cannot enter the narrow lanes to pick up or drop off guests, which can be inconvenient. However, this also provides an authentic experience of living among the locals and immersing yourself in the unique atmosphere of old Beijing.

Location it’s really good, the bedroom was big with a big window also, and the theatre was so funny! The bed was hard and the breakfast was simple, but everything was really good, I loved this place!

The hotel is in a great location, and the staff are extremely friendly. They helped us with everything we needed. The room was clean and tidy, and the housekeeper cleaned it every day, brought us water, and replaced the towels with fresh ones. Every other day there was a performance in the hotel, which we absolutely loved. If I ever come back, I would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended and all compliments to the hotel and staff!

They have performances a few times a week which you can watch. Even when they aren't performing, they have a display with sketches of the puppet designs with some notes about the archetypes they depict. As you walk the halls outside the guest rooms, there are backlit cutouts of some of the puppetry designs which are illuminated if the room is occupied. Many of the rooms overlook the interior area where the performances take place so you can catch a glimpse through the windows. There are also a number of places around the common areas where you can sit and relax. The breakfasts they provide include a quite tasty panini-like sandwich, egg, and yogurt. The staff was a great help with ordering take out delivery and arranging for cars through the Didi ride hailing app. Something to note is that some times the Didi drivers will ask if it is possible to get their cars down the alleys. The 4-5 I rode in during my stay didn't have a problem navigating in or out. Getting to and from the subway stop is very straightforward, Similarly, walking to the Houhai area is pretty easy as well. Though you may want to carry an area map or have a map app for the trip back. The streets and alleys contour to the shape of the lake and can be less of a grid layout.

Great location, neighborhood was amazing to look around. Interior of the facility is also great, they had lots of antique furnitures. I had a beef sandwiches for the breakfast which was so delicious. And the hotel staff, Elsa was super friendly and helpful during my stay. She upgraded my room for free. Would recommend to stay here!

Great location on a beautiful lake close to many sightseeing areas, great street food walking distance The AC in the reception / hall area was too cold for me but i understand other guests might like it

Fantastic central location, shops and restaurants in walking distance. Daily fresh washed towels and bed made. Reception hours. Social athmosphere Cleanliness of room and shower. No fridge or tv in room, patchy internet, no lift. But you can put some food in the fridge behind the reception and the staff helped with taking luggage up and down stairs

I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during my first solo trip. I felt incredibly welcome from the moment I arrived. Amy 欣欣, Elsa 小雨, and the entire staff were so kind, warm, and helpful. The hotel itself is beautiful, artistic, and in a fantastic location. Its the kind of place where you can happy get lost for hours just wandering. I'm on a student budget, and I found this hotel to be a great value for all that it offers. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Beijing.

The hotel common areas and dining room were beautifully decorated and appointed, tasteful with beautiful art. Good location close to beautiful lake and park. Staff were friendly and helpful although a bit too solicitous at times. Sad to miss the shadow puppet show! The room itself was the smallest room we've ever stayed, we could not even walk around the mattress. There was no actual bed, only a mattress on a platform. Barely room to open your suitcase. Room needs a good though cleaning and coat of white paint. Shower door leaked water onto the floor.

First off the staff were phenomenal. Amy and Spike helped us out a lot with courtesy and kindness. Amy in particular helped me navigate the area and find some delicious restaurants after I'd arrived famished. The rest of the staff were very friendly, and even though there was a language barrier, they were attentive and able to talk via their interpreters. I even had a 15 minute talk just with back to back in the translator. The facility was beautifully maintained and offered a fun experience with the shadow puppets and subsequent puppet painting. They also offer laundry at very cheap price. The rooms were always cleaned when we got back. Around the hotel it can feel a bit claustrophobic with the narrow streets, but I felt safe and able to walk wherever I wanted to and any time. You're close enough to the major tourist attractions, about a 30 minute walk to Tiananmen Square. Also the AC was COLD! Absolutely nothing.

No parking area, inconvenient for pickup.

The hotel staff were so great! Elsa, Joli, and Nancy are the best they are so nice and had so many great recommendations for food and what to do! Highly recommend for anyone to stay here when in Beijing. Location was perfect and had so many cool places to walk around.

The shadow art performance was by far the highlight of this hotel and is a super interesting and unique experience. The staff was also extremely kind and helped us throughout our time in China. The room had a slightly bad smell and the bed was a bit hard, but nothing extreme.
