Hakone Fura

A very traditional onsen ryokan with exceptional service. Both the breakfast and dinner were fantastic and truly memorable. The only downside is that the facilities are a little dated, but they are well maintained and very clean. None

We were greeted by the owner who spoke English well and explained the facilities to us. The food was spectacular. We were fed a lavish dinner and the following morning we were served wonderful breakfast. There was only one other group staying at the ryokan so we were able to use the Onsen freely. The following morning the owner arrange our luggage to be picked up and delivered to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Location wise, it is located in Sengokuhara which is one of the little towns near Hakone. We had to take a taxi from Odawara Station to this location which took us through twisty mountain roads. Luckily there was a bus stop 50 m away from the ryokan however you had to walk uphill on a gravel path which may be difficult it you are pulling heavy luggage. The ryokan is old and dated however the hospitality and food made up for that.

The room was spacious. The hotel is relaxing and has a very good vibe. The service is kind and attentive, and the food was delicious and traditional. We only spent one night, but it was awesome and totally worth the trip from Tokyo. It is not a long trip; you take the metro first and then about 40 minutes by bus.

Some of the facilities are a bit aged and might need some renovation.

The dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese meals and were works of art. The detail was incredible and the service wonderful. The rooms were spacious and the house is in a rural area. It is far from the road, so we did have a 10 minute walk from the bus stop. The road is not steep and it was nice to be in a quiet, rural area. The day we left, it was raining and the owner kindly took us to the bus stop. Nothing. They thought of everything and are very detail oriented. It was a wonderful experience to see a real Japanese home.

They really went above and beyond. I have a few food allergies and I let them know ahead of time and they made adjustments to the meals. All of them were very tasty and well thought out. I really appreciated it.

The property was wonderful. It is very clean and the staff member who welcomed us was very friendly and helpful. We greatly enjoyed being away from the city and up in the mountain. It was absolutely amazing.

Our room was a large traditional Japanese style with a fantastic view of the mountains. Everyone took great care to make our stay memorable. The opportunity for a private onsen was also a luxury after a day of traveling and sightseeing. The food was beautiful and full of flavor. I can’t think of anything we would change about our stay.

Fantastic breakfast and dinner. We stayed when there were no other guests, and it was just the most peaceful stay. It was an amazing experience in Hakone. The owner did a lot to ensure our comfort and even drove us to the bus station at the end of our stay. The location is up a hill, just be forewarned in case you are carrying lots of luggage.

The Kaiseki dinner was amazing and so was the breakfast. I enjoyed using the baths--essentially private and the host was awesome. It's a bit of a hike (7-8 minute walk) to get from the main road to the property and I was not looking forward to doing it again, but the host was so kind and offered me a ride down! There were bugs here and there, but to be expected of an older property.

A truly unforgettable stay at Ryokan Hakone Fura. From the moment we arrived, the warm hospitality and attention to detail from the host made us feel incredibly welcome. Every aspect of our experience was exceptional. The traditional Japanese room was spacious, serene, and perfect for our family of four. It was beautifully maintained, blending comfort with authentic Japanese aesthetics. One of the standout highlights was the exquisite kaiseki-style dinner and breakfast. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing seasonal ingredients with refined flavors and elegant presentation. It was a culinary experience we won’t forget—every bite reflected the care and tradition behind Japanese cuisine. The onsen was another highlight—clean and soothing Most importantly, the hospitality here goes above and beyond. The host was incredibly kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. We felt truly cared for, like guests in someone’s cherished home. Hakone Fura is an absolute gem. We can’t wait to return. The only minor downside is the location a little bit far away from the main attractions but there’s a bus stop 10mn walk.

Kotatsu was cool, and the women’s onsen was very spacious. The food was outstanding, and the earthenware was very beautiful The men’s onsen was not as spacious.

I've always dreamed of staying at a ryokan and Hakone Fura is the quintessential ryokan experience with both private and public onsen options and an amazing kaiseki dinner that was beautifully presented. We got to try lots of small courses, and discovered foods that we wouldn't otherwise have known about. Breakfast was also amazing. I came with my two elementary school age kids, so it was nice that the ryokan accepts kids. Our room was clean, spacious, and appealed to my sense of minimalism, but with beautiful Japanese charm in the sliding wooden panels, tatami mats, and floor futon. All very cozy and comfortable. After the onsen, my skin felt so soft and my daughter's tummy ache went away. Definitely healing waters indeed. This was a splurge for my budget, but worth it! The hosts were so kind and gracious. Highly recommended, especially for foodies like us who love trying new things! Location can be a challenge to get to. I found Hakone in general to be very hilly with lots of uneven terrain, which can be both charming and brutal for folks with mobility issues or bad knees, so just a heads up.

Rooms, scenery, onsen and food were absolutely amazing! Only downside is the public transport system in the surrounding area which the ryokan has no control over.

It was the most joyful and satisfied experience in Japan. The food was really amazing and very touched for the details. Even though they dont operate any shuttle bus, the owner or any employee brought us to Bus stop, and I have also lost my ring and I gave it up, but he found and came back to our bus stop. That was the most impressive hospitality I've ever had.

While off the main path, this ryokan more than makes up with superior service and excellent cuisine. Had fantastic experience. Highly recommend Maybe harder to find without google maps

Food is absolutely delicious and will definitely be one of the best meals you'll have in Japan. The staff is also incredibly kind and helpful. The hotel manager took us to the bus stop in the morning since we couldn't get a taxi and he even mailed my jacket (which was forgotten in the room) to another city. Hotel is a bit dated and onsen is indoors, but that's clearly advertised in the pictures/reviews.
