The location, the staff It’s a bit run down. I know it’s a historical building, and that I appreciated, but it could definitely use some renovation. I also never received a key, and even after I asked for one, the house cleaner left the room unlocked after cleaning. There was nothing to worry about, but it just seemed odd.

The location and the ambience of old building The facility was poor, some wing the hot water in broke, some room are no hair dryer. We book 3 night , no room make, no drinking water refill if don’t ask from the staff. When some customer have problem, they will offer a new room with out check the facility. Staff Solving problems as they arise without any planning, to be honestly they are non-professional hotel people.

Charming hotel in a historical building. Friendly and professional staff. Good location near everything (tourist sites, temples, restaurants and cafes). No elevator.

Super charming atmosphere - kind and accommodating staff -

We loved the atmosphere of the hotel; great period decor, an airy courtyard for a cold beer after a hot day of sightseeing, friendly and helpful staff, lovely restaurant terrace for breakfast (which was very generous) and comfortable beds and aircon. We couldn't seem to get the hot water to work in the shower, and as we were road facing, it was a little loud in the mornings as the street came to life, but this would not put us off staying again. We really liked this hotel.

The old world charm is oozing from this hotel. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The location is so central to everything in Kandy. It's a short walk to anywhere that is of interest. The street that it is on is extremely quiet at night. We had to get the early morning train to colombo so the staff organised a packed breakfast for us and a tuk tuk to get us to the station. Great service. The bathroom was very tired and mouldy. I couldn't get the extraction fan to work at all.

The Royal Bar and Hotel is centrally located in the heart of Kandy, in walking distance to the tooth temple, lake and downtown markets. The breakfast on the balcony in the upper floor is nice and was tasty. The whole interior still has a bit of colonial flair, which is why we wanted to stay here. I was even offered to play the old piano. So, our expectations were matched. The rooms are small (as correctly advertized) and the view from our room was not great, but that's how it is on the backside of the houses in the city. The rooms were not ready when we wanted to check-in early (the hotel offered early check-in times at 11AM), but we were offered a welcome drink until they were cleaned within 10 minutes.

This colonial-style hotel was everything I'd hoped it would be – like stepping back in time, but with all the modern conveniences. On arrival, we had a fruit drink overlooking a pretty atrium, with wonderful gnarly trees that reached up above the roof. We admired the artworks, which varied from vintage photos to retro posters advertising train trips in Sri Lanka. We had a four-poster bed and a spacious bathroom; the furnishings complemented the style of the building. In the morning, we enjoyed breakfast on the first floor (second floor, if you're not from the UK!) overlooking the hustle and bustle of the street below. The food was really good: a very generous plate of tropical fruit, homemade juice, a basket of baked goodies (possibly from the adjacent bakery, but I forgot to ask) and eggs of your choice. The staff were all really nice. There were no coffee-making facilities and not enough water in the room; I woke up thirsty one night and had to wait until breakfast for a drink. But these are just quibbles, really!

Great location, good breakfast, lovely staff Neighbouring apartment were playing music late into the night, we called down several times without reaching a resolution so eventually had to go downstairs to speak to the staff to understand where the music was coming from and then they were finally able to get them to stop

Staff was very friendly. The breakfast was really well arranged. We were in a rush because we had to take a train at 08:13 and the breakfast starts at 07:30. They offered to take our breakfast orders a day before, so they can prepare it in advance. That was very considerate. The facility and atmosphere of this building is very unique and antique. It felt like you traveled back in time. The room did not even have a tv or coffee machine! But they did have an AC which was nice. Great location. 5 min walk to the temple. The bar was open till 11pm but we didn’t hear much noise in our room. The doors were tricky… they do belong to the decor but not so practical. We stayed in the suite and it had small windows towards the hallway only, nothing to outside. If you want outside view, you can go to a bar/cafe. Also, be careful with ice cream here, my stomach had trouble with it.

Great atmosphere, lively bar and food choice continental , no Srilankan food in the menu for breakfast, but available for payed meals . My friend owns the hotel , and got the five star service. That was also the reason I picked Royal Bar and Hotel Car parking is a problem as few spaces available at the back of the hotel and cumbersome to get in and out thorough narrow lanes . Meal time takes a long time to serve up ordered meal like lunch. dinner I had at the hotel . Stayed 2 nights .

A stunning property with wonderful history showcased . The staff were friendly and helpful and made the stay that extra special. Great location to explore Kandy. Food was amazing.
