Sugar Marina Hotel -POP- Kata Beach

The Family Biggie room was large (spacious for a family of 4) and appeared clean, with a separate room for luggage, and the beds were comfortable. Nice balcony. The location is excellent, right in the center of Kata and very close to 7-11, restaurants, shops, and massage places. Service was decent, though not particularly memorable. Overall, the hotel doesn’t quite meet the expectations set by its 4-star positioning and online photos. The overall finish and experience feel more basic than anticipated. There’s no proper reception or arrival experience — it feels more like checking in at a café than a hotel. The 2 elevators are small, overly bright, and often crowded, and the hallways don’t feel especially well maintained. There were also many families with young children staying during our visit, which creates a busier, more casual atmosphere rather than a relaxing resort feel. Although the room appeared clean, we never quite felt comfortable enough to fully relax. We found ourselves wearing flip-flops around the room the entire stay, which isn’t something we would normally do. The room lighting is too dim. The bathroom design is not practical, with clear glass doors for both the shower and toilet and no locks, which means there is essentially no privacy. We had to hang towels over the doors to make it usable. The pool area was particularly disappointing. It is much smaller and less well maintained than it appears online, and the photos seem to be taken from above, which makes it look larger and far more impressive than it actually is. In reality, it wasn’t appealing enough for us to use at all during our three-day stay. There were also small details that added up. Coffee was not replenished, buckets were placed in the hallway during a heavy rain, and there is even a 50 baht charge for a bucket of ice. The breakfast buffet was busy and looked quite average, and we were glad we didn’t book it. One concerning point is that after making this booking, I received multiple WhatsApp scam messages asking me to verify details and make payments. I ignored them, but when I flagged this to the hotel, they didn’t seem particularly concerned. I have not experienced this with any other Booking.com property, which raises questions about how securely guest information is handled.

What touched me the most was how thoughtful the hotel team was during my birthday stay. They surprised me by decorating my room beautifully and even prepared a birthday cake for me. It was such a sweet gesture and made my birthday extra special and memorable. Thank you for the amazing hospitality and making me feel so welcomed throughout my stay. I truly enjoyed every moment and would definitely love to come back again!

The breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of options each day. The pool was large and perfect for the kids to enjoy. We also appreciated the complimentary bottled water provided daily for each guest, which was especially nice in the heat. The retro style of the hotel gave it a fun character, and the Bluetooth Aiwa speakers were a nice touch for streaming my Spotify playlist. There were plenty of restaurants nearby, and the Kata street food market was a highlight. The front desk staff were also very responsive and helpful throughout our stay. The hotel only offered complimentary shuttle service to Kata Beach twice a day. It was too far to walk in the heat, so more frequent beach transfers would have made a big difference. The first shuttle did not leave until noon, and I really wish there had been an earlier option. There were also mosquitoes in the room, and my kids were bitten several times. Because housekeeping opened the doors during cleaning, we chose not to have the room serviced. The hotel eventually provided a plug in mosquito repellent, but unfortunately it did not seem to help much.

Its great family hotel. It has big rooms, pool is big with a slide in the middle. Great for children probably not so great for adults only. Breakfast has a lot of options but its a bit crowded. They should somehow increase the space for serving it. Hotel is really big but breakfast place isn't. There could be some renovation done on the rooms but that is okay. There is also bus going to the beach few times a day. But Kata beach isn't really the best. We prefered Kata beach Noi. The restaurant just across the hotel is AWESOME! We ate there all the time. Really loud air condition in rooms (even though it was set to minimum). Pool had too much chlorine inside. Our children had red faces from the chlorite along with many other children (we noticed at breakfast). Maybe something could be done in this direction.

Location was great as it is set back from The road so we didn’t hear the traffic. Would be nice if it were easier to access the beach through a path but club med is right there. Would be nice to have a private bathroom door- tricky when sharing with the family.

Lovely pool set up. Kids had a lot of fun there. Great for families. Has 1 room for family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids). About 10 min minute walk to street food market at night and the beach. Next door has 7/11 and massage parlor. Very good breakfast buffet. Has a kids ball pit. Due to my attention to detail- Whoever designed this hotel- may either be inexperienced or the owner wanted to save money on material. The quality of building material shows wear and tear and poor quality. The outdoor pool shows discoloration where pool water ends- they should have added tiles. The elevator is very slow and does not have air conditioner.

Cool decor. Nice rooms. Comfortable beds. Pool area was unique. If available the downstairs rooms seem to open out onto the pool which looks very cool. You can walk easily to restaurants. Shuttle bus to beach a few times per day. We had bunk beds in our room. Unfortunately the space between bed and wall wasn’t cleaned properly. We cleaned it out somewhat and I also mentioned it to front desk and cleaning staff cleaned it properly then that day.

The staff was very nice and helpful especially Mook and Nokky!

The Hotel was super cute retro , and was near the market and beach and 7 eleven also near Halal restaurant. Staff was super nice & breakfast was amazing Nothing

This property was amazing. The location was walking distance from the beach. The hotel offers a good shuttle service from the hotel to the beach so you don’t have to walk if you don’t have to. The rooms were clean and very well decorated. They rooms came with a mini bar with free drinks, beach towels, A beach bag, beach sandals, umbrellas, robes. We stayed in the swim up room by the pool which also had a nice bed. We were taking a late flight to go home at 9 PM and requested for late checkout and the hotel was very accommodating. they were able to put us in another room until we had to leave for our flight. The hotel staff was very helpful. The receptionist named Mook, Nok, Film, Dew and zaw were so helpful with the whole process. I would definitely recommend staying here and I’d stay here again. If you plan to stay in Kata beach the location in this area is good , you access supermarkets and restaurants and night market . All bars and restaurants are walking distance. The smart bus from the airport directly comes to this location. The room i had on 4 th floor the size of room is good and has big bathroom. They have beach towel and blanket and basket for your beach. Mini fridge is there also. The breakfast is good enough. At the time i went even it is low season ( October) the breakfast at 9 am was full of people and it is difficult to prepare your plate and long wait for coffee machine. The staff are nice and helpful. The room can be cleaner better with newer bedsheet ( that is only i gave 4 start) in general good hotel little pricy . A great location. Plenty to do and see within short walking distance. Comfortable and spacious room. Cheerful & helpful staff. Special thanks to Film & Kruad for organising a late checkout at very short notice when our outbound flight was delayed. The only thing I didn't like was leaving.
