Caruma Surf Hostel & Suites

The location is great for the beach and all sites in Matosinhos (I was there for conferences and stayed for surfing and free sardines at the folkloric fishermen's festival). You could describe this hostel is a cross between an art gallery and surf club (i.e., paintings and boards cover the walls) with a cool, funky, eclectic vibe. The staff are all great and helpful and the way the space is set up you will meet people there. Luis sets a great tone for everything and I highly recommend a surf lesson with him!

All the public places - kitchen, toilets, showers were really untidy.

The whole place has an amazing surf vibe that makes you feel relaxed and at home from the moment you arrive. The beach is just a short walk away, which is perfect if you want to surf, swim, or simply enjoy the ocean. What makes this hostel special is all the little details. You can rent surfboards, play chess, guitar, or PlayStation, and there are plenty of cozy common areas to meet people and hang out. It’s the kind of place where it’s easy to make new friends and feel part of the community. The staff and volunteers are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help. They really create a warm atmosphere and make sure everyone feels comfortable. The rooms were clean, the facilities were great, and overall everything exceeded my expectations. One of the best hostels I’ve stayed in, and I would happily come back again. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fun, friendly, and relaxed place near the beach! ?☀️

I came late an stayed one night in mixed dorms, it was convenient since I wanted to be in Matosinhos and it’s really close to the metro and to the beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I liked the lobby of this place, it was very cozy and spacious, with lots of art objects. Probably because I was late the showers were not very clean.

The management

Sorry, but we CANNOT say anything positive! We booked, paid & received confirmation; then they bumped us to a dingy sister hotel (Senhor Matosinhos) 1/2 km away at 8:30pm. There was no warning message, despite them having all our information. We did not book the dingy hotel & would never want to stay there. Mould on the wall & in bathroom; weird bathroom situation. Their booking behaviour = bait & switch. Boo!! They also owe us the difference in fees, as the hotel was cheaper than the hostel. Thank goodness next accommodation was better or we would lose confidence in booking.com. All we got for an explanation was “sorry, you’ve been transferred” But you charged my visa days ago & you confirmed ☹️

Excellent hostel for connecting with others along your journey. Loved the open layout of the hostel, and the relaxed nature of the place. Minutes walk from the beach, grocery, and dining. Not well-suited for pilgrims: no place to do laundry, or hang wet clothes to dry.

The host was very welcoming!

Great hostel, unfortunately loud past midnight.

The property overcharged me for 2 nights of stay. Despite calling them multiple times and them saying they would refund the 130 euros of overcharge, they never did. At one point they stopped responding to my e-mails and calls. In the end I had to get the fee reimbursed by Booking as they stopped responding to them as well.

Very comfortable bed and friendly host. The kitchen was nice as well. I wouldn’t recommend this hostel for pilgrims- there is nowhere to hang clothes to dry. There was also a bug or mosquito in my room that bit me as I slept.

Location was good and the bed was super comfy. The back out curtains are amazing and I slept better than at home. Lots of little sitting areas. The beds with curtains and location to the Camino
