Gorgeous space. Large room. Incredibly helpful and friendly staff. The location was phenomenal (all three of our walking tours went straight by the entrance) and we were made to feel entirely safe as the door was only openable from the inside and staffed 24 hours a day. Wifi worked excellently in the courtyard but only one of our laptops could use it reliably in the room. The window opened onto a stairwell which would've been awkward except we had the whole property to ourselves. The desk could use a lamp.

Location Clean Greeted by the Hotel Owner in person Feel-at-home feeling

warm hosts who very helpful and kind. my room didn't have a window, but it was otherwise very nice!

Very clean rooms. The location. The employees Saira and the night custodian. Complimentary fruit and coffee in the morning. The premises are acceptable and generally okay, but the experience was seriously affected by the owner’s rude attitude. I stayed there for 8 nights in 2 rooms (3 people). Nevertheless, she tried to charge me double the Booking’s advertised price just to get a different room -one with a window. I lost over two hours of my vacation negotiating this issue. If it hadn’t been for the employee Saira (?) who was professional and genuinely helpful, I would have had to book two rooms in another hotel at 6 pm.

The staff was absolutely fantastic and the building was lovely and safe. The bed was very comfortable There was a night club across the street that played extraordinary loud music all night long until 3-4am (no curfew in Oaxaca) The hot water didn’t work. After I reported this, I would get warm water after 2-3 minutes of letting the water run (they are in a 6 year drought) and then hot water after 4-5+ minutes of waiting (not good)

This is my second stay at Casa Esmeralda and hopefully not my last. Location is perfect. Rosario and her staff are super friendly, and responsive . Hotel is very clean and well maintained. Excellent value.

The personal touches. Property owner. Wanted to meet the people who are staying at her hotel and gave us a souvenir. Her recommendation for restaurants and shops or simply Super ……..

Location! Cleanliness, Wifi The owner is really friendly but she sits in the center courtyard and has no idea that she conducts business by shouting. I don't think she realizes how loud she is and that the courtyard is inside and sound echoes. If you are out all day, this would not effect you. We took naps because the festivals went well into the nights

Very kind. I had a medical problem

My room didn't have a window at eye level. There was only a high window in the bathroom. It was quite noisy at night, being across the street from a night club.

Passable

Location was great, staff was very nice and helpful.

Loved the location - the best! The staff were very helpful as well We chose the room with the terrace which makes it sound nicer than it is - which was just a roof. This could have been set up with some seating, umbrella, plants etc as it did overlook the lively street and cathedral. As it was, we never used it.

Wonderful owner & staff Not used to room without a window

Hostess and her assistant were fantastic. Unfortunately, even though the hostess warned us about some noise at night, my buddy and I had no idea there was a club next door and the music THUMPED until late at night. We moved out the next morning and the hostess gave us a refund without arguing- she completely understood. The thumping music from the bar next door was unbearable. Absolutely THUMPING club music we couldn't sleep through even with earplugs in. Deal breaker 100%. Too bad!

No use of amazing rooftop terrace - would have been nice if breakfast had been offered there; not very good breakfast - we came with five kids and owner was not flexible enough to offer at least juice for the kids who obviously do not drink coffee and who - at least most of them - do not like tea; Nice place but too expensive and overpriced during Christmas period

Well first of all, it was cozy with 6 units. I had the smallest room with my wife but only needed a good place to sleep and shower. The owner Rosario greeted me and made me feel at home. The maid and front desk Saira (I probably am misspelling) and the bellman with a mustache were so attentive and nice. The only way to be allowed entrance to the facilities is to ring the bell which gave a sense of security. And it is centrally located. My wife and I were there for the Día De Los Muertos celebration and that was a blast as well. I recommend this adorable hotel. If you are looking for spa and amenities, this place is not for that. But they make the best coffee and have bread and fruit for breakfast and plenty of complimentary water.

The location is great, right in the cultural center of Oaxaca. The room was comfortable. The wifi was terrible, the bathroom became flooded every time I showered. One night rained a lot and the staff didn't open the door and I was soaked, I ringed at the door for 30 minutes on the rain until they opened the door. They don't take money transfers only cash or Card. The card terminal was not working properly, so I had to go to an ATM and get cash to pay for the room. I don't think I will be staying here again.

The bathroom is very small and has a sliding door which is not sound proof and there is no ventilation in the bathroom.

I wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else in Oaxaca, thanks to the thoughtful hospitality of Casa Esmeralda’s owner, Rosario, and her kind, efficient staff. The 8 room hacienda-like hotel is bright, welcoming, colorful, clean, comfortable (with modern features, including air conditioning), safe (surveillance cameras and doorman restricted access), and is a 5-10 minute walk to Templo de Santo Domingo, Centro Cultural, Jardin Botanico, Centro Gastronomico, galleries, museums, mercados, and the Zocalo. Our large room on the top floor gave us full access to the terrace to enjoy coffee, workout, and a fortunate birds eye view of festive parades during the week long Guelaguetza celebration. Rosario (a former chef) recommended otherworldly restaurants, connected us to a well informed taxi driver (Hugo) who gave as history/anthropology lectures on our early morning drive to Monte Alban, and since his son is a muralist, art history perspectives and street art walk suggestions. Rosario’s kind thoughtfulness will remain an enduring memory of this trip. Although physically handicapped, she asked her husband to purchase an analgesic balm when my sister fell (old knee injury), and hours after Rosario departed for the evening, she returned at 9pm with a birthday gift for my sister (lovely traditional embroidered blouse and earrings). Rosario’s interactions with us were not business transactions, but rather, humorous, warm, considerate conversations reserved for family members. We can’t wait to return, and highly recommend Casa Esmeralda N/A
