⭐☆☆☆☆ This hotel may have been a five-star property decades ago, but it has failed to keep up with modern international standards. It still feels trapped in the past while the rest of the hospitality industry has moved forward. The rooms are extremely outdated. The carpets have an unpleasant smell, and the electrical system is old-fashioned. Every light has its own separate switch, with no master switch to control the room lighting conveniently. Small details like these make the hotel feel neglected rather than luxurious. The front desk staff were the worst part of my stay. They were unhelpful and provided poor customer service. Room service was also disappointing, slow, and below the standard you would expect from a five-star hotel. Breakfast was another major letdown. The selection was very limited, and much of the food did not seem fresh. It certainly does not reflect the quality expected from a luxury hotel. To make matters worse, the hotel required a deposit of RMB 1,000 per day for the minibar. I told them to remove the minibar instead, but rather than doing that, they locked the entire refrigerator, preventing me from even storing my own bottled water. They refused to unlock it, which was both unreasonable and frustrating. The only positive aspect of this hotel is its location. Shanghai is a beautiful city, but unfortunately, staying at this hotel significantly damaged my overall experience. This was one of the most disappointing hotel stays I have ever had, and I would strongly advise anyone considering booking here to look elsewhere. Don’t let the photos fool you—this is a very old hotel that no longer deserves its five-star rating.

The rooms are exceptionally spacious, comfortable, and beautifully maintained. We were lucky to have a fantastic view of the Shanghai skyline, especially at night. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of both Chinese and Western dishes. Everything was fresh and there was something for every taste. The Executive Lounge was one of the highlights of our stay. The complimentary drinks and snacks made it a perfect place to relax after a busy day exploring the city. I highly recommend booking a room with lounge access. The staff were consistently friendly and helpful. During our stay, I needed to send several packages, and the team went above and beyond to assist me with the shipping process. Their kindness and patience were greatly appreciated. The location is another major advantage. It’s within walking distance of Nanjing Road, The Bund, restaurants, shopping, and public transportation, making it an excellent base for exploring Shanghai. Overall, this hotel offers outstanding value with spacious rooms, excellent service, delicious breakfast, a fantastic lounge, and a perfect location. We would definitely choose Grand Central Hotel again on our next visit to Shanghai.

Fantastic hotel with great location within walking distance to everything. The hotel staff was exceptional and very professional. The breakfast was great. Andy and his team took great care of me. The gym could have a few more weight machines for chest, shoulder and legs. It is big with many aerobic machines but weights are not 5 star standard. Please fix this. Gym. See above. Needs more weight machines for chest, shoulder and legs.

Good location with Nanjing Road pedestrian walkway just around the corner. The flooring around the indoor swimming pool is all marble, which makes the floor very slippery when it is wet!

Good location. Room is large and clean. Staff are friendly. Hope there will be more choices of food for breakfast.

The staff were lovely, breakfast had plenty of choice, and the hotel itself looks great. The location is hard to beat — you’re literally a few steps away from the main pedestrian street with all the shops and restaurants, but because the hotel is slightly tucked away, you don’t hear any of that noise. It was super quiet at night, which we really appreciated. All the big sights are an easy walk too. The only real issue was our room. We were put right next to the lift, and every time it arrived there was a loud chime. The room door has gaps and basically no soundproofing, so we heard that beep constantly. It got old really fast, especially when you’re trying to relax or sleep. If you book here, just make sure you ask for a room far from the elevator. A couple of other things surprised us. At check-in they took a deposit that was close to 50% of what we paid for the whole stay. That’s a big chunk of money to have on hold, and it wasn’t made clear beforehand. Also, the hotel rules mention a fine if you lose your key card. I’ve never come across that in a five-star place before — felt a bit stingy

I stayed at this hotel over the New Year and had a wonderful experience. The location is excellent—just a 2-minute walk to Nanjing Road and very convenient for visiting the Bund. The suite was very spacious and comfortable. We stayed as a group of four and found it to be great value for money. The suite included one large bedroom, a separate living room, and a small working room that could be converted into an additional bedroom with an extra bed, which worked perfectly for us. The highlight of our stay was the exceptional service, especially from Francis Zhang, the concierge. He was extremely helpful, enthusiastic, and genuinely service-minded. He went above and beyond to assist with arrangements, recommend and book restaurants, and proactively arrange our airport transfer without being asked. His attentiveness and positive attitude made our stay smooth, stress-free, and truly enjoyable. “He significantly contributed to our 5-star experience”

I was stayed in Grand Central hotel Shanghai last December 3rd through December 17th with my husband. During our staying we feels hotel service is very nice and perfectional make us feels comfortable especially Andy the hotel front manager gave the kindness and worms service makes us feel very appreciated. I hope next time when I come to visit Shanghai again will stay in Grand Central hotel again. And I also will introduce all my friends about the Grand Central hotel Shanghai when they plan to come visit Shanghai. Jasmine Wang Just think the room bathroom needs more clean as a 5 star hotel especially the toilet.

Located in downtown

I do not recall a fridge. It's a little old and tired but not in a bad way.

The buffet breakfast is below five-star standard — uninspiring and repetitive. While there was plenty of variety, the food quality was mediocre at best, and during our six-night stay, the selection never changed. Executive Lounge access (5–7 pm) was included with the suite and offered complimentary food and drinks. Unfortunately, it was completely empty, with an awkward silence that could easily be improved by some light background music. The finger-food buffet was disappointing; when we arrived shortly after 6 pm, we were the only guests, and all of the “hot” dishes had gone cold. Lastly, the Wi-Fi is almost unusable — painfully slow, and most international websites and apps (Google, Facebook, Netflix, etc.) are blocked, which makes it very inconvenient for foreign travelers.

Location is great, 1 min from Nanjing road, close to Metro and centrally located from all attraction areas. Room was clean and renovated, quite with comfortable beds. Breakfast has a variety but taste might be better. Breakfast & coffee taste might be slightly improved.
