The staff service, the shuttle service, the room and the bathroom. I was expecting a bigger onsen but it was nice.

We are an older couple traveling with friends. This was our third visit to Ryokan Murayama and if we can swing it, we will stay again. The hotel is located outside of the main downtown area which we like because it is quieter and less busy. A short walk up the hill is the outdoor historical museum Hida No Sato featuring the gassho-zukuri farmhouses and buildings. We enjoyed visiting this museum much more than Shirakawago which was extremely crowded with tourists. There is a free shuttle bus offered in the morning into town. The breakfast and dinners are superb, the rooms are Japanese style some with shared bathrooms and others with private bathrooms which we had. The owner and staff are friendly and most helpful. A wonderful place to stay and enjoy Takayama. everything was perfect

The atmosphere is absolutely unique. You feel like living in a Japanese Anime. The dinner was amazing with so much variety and the spa, which is included in the stay is a nice plus. The attentiveness of the host. It is not centrally located so you need to bear in mind that you have to take taxi, hotel shuttle or a local bus. Not a big deal as the Ryokan is an experience itself and worth the hassle

Looks a very traditional ryokan. Might be wrong but the multi-storey building is built using the "kumiki" (joinery-no nails) method. Thank goodness for small elevators to get yourself and your luggage to your room. There are private couple or family rooms for the onsen - which is great. Kaiseki dinner with Hida beef that practically melts in your mouth is heavenly. Murayama-san (2nd gen owner) speaks good English and makes the best chawanmushi dish we've eaten. The grilled whole iwana (cold freshwater fish) eaten from the stick needs to be savored. Location is abit outside of town of Takayama although there is a shuttle service.

Free parking... This is an old tired Ryokan. Everything is charged extra. We booked for the premium Hida beef filet dinner (¥8,800) and it was very disappointing. Unfortunately seems like there was a downgrade substitution as it was tough and chewy not what we were expecting. Half board ended up costing more than the room. The owner seemed like he was aware and avoided us while interacting with other guests.

The onsen was a bit run-down. Walls are thin and we could clearly hear the neighbouring guests (including a crying baby). The adjacent restaurant was not a very pleasant experience, especially for the price.

The staff is so nice and kind, the place is just awesome very traditional. We had the full curse dinner and it was just fantastic.

The food was very good, the onsen was clean, and the room was very lovely. Everyone is very friendly and we loved our stay there.

We loved the stylish and spacious japanese room and the exclusive vibe of the place. It gave a special feel to our stay. We appreciated the owner's friendliness and speaking English. The neighbourhood is lovely and invites for short walks in the nature. The hot bath helped us relax after a long drive.
