Helpful and friendly staff. Gorgeous building that we felt history. It was set up to relax and enjoy the stay, not just to sleep and rest. The breakfast was lovely, too. Taxi is the only way to get there. the staff was very helpful to make sure we can reserve one. But without it, we may have run into trouble getting around.

Absolutely fabulous family-type Ryokan. We have stayed in dozens of Ryokans in Japan over the years and it was one of the most welcoming, charming and lovely Ryokans we've ever been to. Kind and extremely friendly and helpful staff, amazing facilities and so many lovely services, from the free sake happy hours, to the free winter boots, free snacks all day etc. Would absolutely recommend and we will come back for sure!

Property is a little over a mile from town so if you plan on going into town much, plan on arranging transportation (Uber taxis are readily available, about $1000 yen). As expected, the building is old and a bit drafty so it can get chilly especially in various rooms like the shower room.

It is very traditional house and we were absolutely amazed by the cultural part of our stay. The friendliness of the staff was amazing! Hospitality of it’s best The pillows and the futon beds were not really for us but it was part of the experience :)

Almost everything about our stay at Iroriyado Hidaya exceeded our expectations. The staff was so lovely, they went the extra mile with little things to make our stay special, everything was clean, and our Japanese breakfast was delicious! It won't let me continue without saying something we didn't like, so I will say the onsen was way too hot during our private use. We could have gotten dressed and I'm sure the staff would have helped us sort it out, but we didn't, so that's on us ;).

The welcome was phenomenal - best I experienced in Japan. The host greeted us and helped us pull together an itinerary based on our likes and needs. Nitpicking, but it’s a little far (like 10-15 min walk) from most things. Given snow, we took cabs (1000 yen) to town typically.

Everything about this place was amazing! The staff was so welcoming right from the start and when we asked about things to do, the brought us tea and chatted with us about the area. The Japanese breakfast was spectacular, the room was spacious and comfortable, the onsen was lovely. Highly highly recommend this property! Nothing - we loved everything!

The staff & environment. Unlock one of my dream stay in Japan Maybe the hotel dont have private bathroom

The hosts exemplified the warmest hospitality in all of our stays in Japan. This is a very traditional Ryoken that is one of the highlights of our stays in Japan. Wish we could have stayed longer. The onsen was a bonus and the Japanese breakfast was so delicious. We had origami lessons and did some Japanese calligraphy. They made us dinner reservations at an amazing Yakiniku, the most delicious Hida beef we ever had. Nothing. It was wonderful!

The staff were truly kind and heartwarming. We were welcomed with a tea ceremony and treated with special care during our stay. The breakfast was also wonderful. One thing to keep in mind is that the futon style beds can be difficult to navigate for older travelers (standing up from the ground without anything to steady oneself).

Absolute treat and great find. Very friendly and helpful staff, with lots of tips for the surrounding areas and places to go in Takayama. Cozy onsen, nice amenities with warm coals provided for a nice fireside atmosphere.

Traditional building, care and attention of the owners Nothing

The hospitality was superb. Upon arrival, we were served matcha tea and traditional peanut snacks from Takayama, which were both delicious. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. In particular, Haruka provided us with a detailed explanation of the ryokan's facilities, as well as recommendations on attractions in and around Takayama. When we asked if we could buy fruits at Miyagawa morning market, she recommended that we buy apples there, and we successfully managed to purchase sweet apples the next day. Haruka also provided us with an extremely generous selection of Japanese snacks and helped us to select fragrant Japanese incense to light up in our room. The staff were able to communicate in basic English and the posters / printouts in the hotel (e.g. guidance on how to use the onsen & eat the Japanese breakfast) were in multiple languages. The ryokan went above and beyond to help us with our requests. They helped us to book a reservation at our requested restaurant (Kyoya) on the day of our stay, even though we reached out to them prior to our stay. I had initially wanted to ask them to help me forward my luggage to another hotel, but they kindly offered to help me store my luggage for 1.5 days after our checkout instead, which helped me save on luggage forwarding fees. The ryokan is housed in a building that is over 100 years old. Despite this, the rooms were impressively clean and well-maintained, with modern facilities such as air-conditioning and bidet toilets. The futons in the room were also very cozy and the blanket was thick and comfortable. The ryokan has an indoor onsen, which we found very relaxing after a long day outside. The ryokan can also help you light up an irori (traditional Japanese charcoal-fired hearth) although we did not try out this service. Nothing!

The attention to detail is unmatched! I highly recommend this stay for a traditional stay! We would have stayed longer but couldn't!

Overpriced ryokan equivalent to 3-star hotels in Europe.
