Lovely building and setting. The staff in the restaurant in the evening were excellent - attentive and informative. Brown stains all around the taps in the bath - just didn’t look good

The lady that checked us in was welcoming and friendly, she got us booked in for breakfast and bravely removed a giant spider from the room for me. She also rang me to let me know it was safe to return. The small sauna and steam room were quite nice. The hotel has seen better days - you will think it is a Britannia hotel but apparently it isn't. The corridors have absolutely taken water damage and dried out naturally, the stairway smells like a pub carpet and they haven't done a very good job on enforcing the no smoking rule. The hallway and room carpets were stained and fraying. The room really needed a good clean as all the surfaces were stained. The beds are also showing their age and aren't particularly comfortable which adding to the poor soundproofing makes for a bad night's sleep. The bathroom had mould. Some of the sockets were temperamental and the hairdryer didn't work at all. The WiFi is absolutely unusable. Don't expect any decent coffee at breakfast.

The central building is like a castle. Very clean. The pool is too big and the spa is what you need. Near to bus station. A mini bar inside the room would be helpful. A little far from Edinburgh. Around 45 minutes by bus or train to the center.

Excellent breakfast choice available and perfect service. The restaurant menu for the evening meal was perfect for what we wanted. The food was well cooked and well presented...the fish battered fish was cooked to perfection and the sticky toffee pudding was just amazing....the best I have had for a long time! Lovely service from all the staff. The bedroom was compact but had everything we needed. The bathroom had excellent water pressure. Some areas were a little tired and could do with a refresh, but this in no way affected our stay. There was limited wardrobe storage, with no drawer space, but again this did not affect our stay as we worked around it. However, we did pay extra for an upgrade for a bigger room which was a little disappointing.

Loved the country traditional vibe, rooms a good size, restaurant was sweet the idea of spa retreat was good but facilities weren’t great felt like a communal leisure centre. Staff in restaurant were very young and quite slow with service Bedroom smelt of damp Bathroom dated

Easy to get train to Edinburgh. Lovely grounds. Swimming pool good although needs some attention to upgrade. Lovely lounge looking out to gardens. Young lady on reception when we arrived managed to find another room for us which was a lot bigger and cooler and which had a fully functioning tv including bb1 and bbc2.Girls on reception are v friendly. We found at night that both the side wall lights did not work and one actually moved about. The bed was not comfortable it actually had 2 big indents as it was in my opinion past its best. Breakfast on 1st morning was a bit overcooked in fact my sausage was frazzled. 2nd morning was big improvement. Ladies at breakfast very nice. When I wanted to call the reception to report tv in room 7 there is no room phone so I had to trail back down to reception to find that the Powers above reception removed all room phones. The reception girls gave me a leaflet advising a number to call by my mobile and at my expense to report faults in their hotel. I really dont think this is a step improving customer service and hope McDonalds hotel group have a serious think about reversing this decision. I honestly think the rooms should be checked on a weekly basis by someone senior lights working fittings installed properly or by your maintenance person. Address the problems before the customer.finds them and has to raise them on their mobile phone and has their stay ruined.

The staff was amazing and we loved the pub ! The pool was nice ! The room was big and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom needs to be updated, especially the shower. The shower was only covered half way by a glass, so the water was splashing outside of the shower. The lights could only be activated by the key card and since we were provided with only 1 key card, it was complicated when we had to go to sleep. We could only close the lights by removing the key card, which closed/open all lights (and electricity - television) at once.
