Suburban Studios Winston-Salem near Hanes Mall

We only needed a place to sleep for one night.

It happened as I was leaving to check out. The door handle wouldn't move, despite no lock or latch engaged. I placed 2 calls to the main desk, and with the 2nd, a maintenance man was sent to remedy the situation. He badged into the room with no trouble at all. Then he let the door shut. Suddenly we were both locked in. Ultimately, he had to bust through a screen window to badge us both out. I asked for a refund for this 2nd of my 2 night stay through the office directly and Hotels. Suburban Studios flatly refused twice. I also gave Choice Hotels a description of the incident. My primary grievance is with the nature of this incident. Every room in this property has a stove; so, every room is at a higher chance than your typical hotel room of being a site of a fire. Imagine being a small child, or someone with a mobility issue, who has a fire break out in their room only to find that their door is somehow locked on the inside. Do you expect this guest to bust through a screen and jump out a window? I deeply hope that Choice took my mention of the fire risk seriously. My lesser, secondary issue is the refund, solely because this appears to be part of a pattern of the hotel refusing to give back money over legitimate causes. See a different April '26 review on Choice for support; this behavior isn't a fluke.

VERY unamused and a waste of money!

Affordable and moderately clean. The area is very sketchy. People were almost always sitting on the stairs and wouldn't move when you needed to get by. Each time I came and went, there were the same people with two incredibly aggressive and reactive dogs outside. Id go in my room for hours and come out to leave and they would still be sitting outside near the stairs. A lot of long term residence/people living there. There was a school bus parked adjacent to the parking lot and there appeared to be people living in there and coming and going as well. If you are traveling with animals or kids- I do not recommend staying here due to the safety concerns regarding aggressive/reactive dogs. I also observed individuals using substances in the breezeways and being rough with their children.

No pots,pans or utensils. So purchase some before you arrive. If you plan on cooking.

Clean room. Helpful front desk person.

The room was nasty ? smelled like weed and cigarettes... brown substance running down the wall in the bathroom. The entire room needs a thorough cleaning!!!

Fire alarm going off several times

No amenities. Bed uncomfortable.

Location was great. People fighting ...kept me up all night.

One of the staff knocked on the door but didn't even wait for us to answer before just opening the door. Luckily we had the safety lock on but it was very invasive.

Man oh man… there was not much I liked at all! DISAPPOINTING AT ITS BEST! Very unsanitary! I don’t like how they don’t clean! I had Lysol but I don’t know if it could even get past all previous germs! ? wiped the bathroom counter and it looked like I cleaned the floor!

The room i stayed in was ok not the cleanest do to the shower ceilings had mold and the room smelled like wet dog

Minor issues, there was a gap under the door, that if there had been any rain or if this would've been a fall trip, would have caused water or debris to come in under the door. Very limited channels on the television in the room. Toilet paper holder was broken, as well as the towels being extremely old, to the point of in need of replacement. Overall, a good place to sleep and rest.

Filthy, mold in the bathroom, only give you two towels and both were disgusting. Got this hotel due to my fiance being in the hospital nearby and needed a room with a stove and fridge. Only the small burner worked on the stove and that being generous with saying it worked. Barely any parking and had to park at the hotel next door. The room keys worked when they wanted to.

They cleaned just the toilet, not the tub and changed the sheets every other weekend and would skip altogether when crowded. My floor was mopped with cold water out of a cup and a dirty swiffer pad--no hot water, soap or cleaning solution. The floors were dirty.
