The stairs

The location is perfect, very close to the center and the metro, in a quiet area. There was no air conditioning or fan and the heat wave was going through Europe, the room was on the ground and the only window that opened overlooked the terrace of the hotel, it was not convenient to have open, the pillows were terrible.

Too warm during the summer and you can hear neighbours

Excellent location and easy to get to and from Centraal Station. Very close proximity to ARTIS and Hortus botanical gardens. It's easy to get around anywhere in Amsterdam from here. It felt very safe to be here and it's quiet in the evenings. Prepare for climbing steep staircases to get to your room, a true Dutch building experience. Staff is friendly too. It was easy to check in and check out. We stayed at the top level during mid-June. It gets really hot up there in the evenings. There is one shared toilet room and one shower room. Prepare for shared facilities as you will need to wait for your turn to use them. These comments are not complaints. I thought it would be helpful to let future guests have an awareness. With historic buildings, what you get should be expected. This hotel was great overall.

- Be aware that there are only shared toilets at the hotel located at each floor. I think for this amount of money it is not really worth it not to have a private bathroom. - You can hear other tenants.

The stairs were no joke.

Very clean and comfortable room, amazing location and neighborhood. The staff was outstanding and provided a great service, they were very nice to us. We had to take the stairs in order to go to the bathroom, this is the only downside of the place.

The employees of the hotel were very nice to us during our stay at the hotel. When we were checking out, they let us leave our things there for the whole day and use their common room to rest. Always smiling and in the mood for a chat. I would return to this hotel next time. Our room was on the top floor (third floor) and the bed was directly under the roof, so my friend and I kept hitting our heads when we got out of bed. Also, the stairs were very steep, so I would not recommend for people with limited mobility.

The location and the staff were good!

Location is good, close to central station. The bed was comfortable and the linens were clean. The room had a small sink, which was convenient as it meant you didn’t have to use a shared bathroom The room lighting is very dim and needs improvement. The staircase steps are very narrow, making it difficult to walk comfortably and potentially unsafe for some guests. Additionally, housekeeping entered the room one hour before check-in without knocking.

The lady at the reception was overwhelmingly friendly (we didn't hate you btw, those were stairs to valhalla ?) May not be quiet sometimes.

Smell in the common areas was terrible. Toilet is not in the room, it is common on the floor. Room and shower felt run-down and worn.

Location is really good, and when we requested to clean the rooms, they cleaned it. They had tea and water beverages. Sink had only hot water

No toilet in the bathroom; there was a constant fight for the shared one among the rooms.

Great location and very clean

First and foremost the staff was exceptional! friendly, helpful and accommodating Next best thing is the location. Everywhere in Amsterdam is easily accessible by foot or Tram or Train within steps. Hotel Hortus is beyond clean The heat in our room could not be controlled and we found it uncomfortably warm.
