Clean rooms
-
Very clean room. Spacious with the perk of a kitchenette and in-room washer/dryer combination. More like a small apartment vs a hotel room. Nice hot breakfast each day until 11:00am… really appreciate the later end time. Great location in downtown Evanston… super close to CTA station, coffee shop, bakery etc. Easy commute to the city. Convenient on-site parking. A stellar deal for a great spot!! Would stay here again 110%!!

Really helpful staff, really nice rooms.
-
The breakfast was great. Nice and clean. Staff was helpful. The washer is a washer dryer combo so not great, takes a long time to completely dry the clothes.
-
Great little hotel we happened upon. Clean room, great staff, breakfast included and good food/dinner options nearby. The rooms had a little kitchenette, and a pullout couch that was comfortable. Overall, great little place to stay!

Nice spot in Evanston!
-
Really nice and quite area and close to the university and lake.
-
Great last minute stay! Really nice and clean with delicious breakfast.
-
The suit was clean and there was enough spacer for all six of us to sleep, however the listing did not mention only having 1 bathroom in the suit which was not ideal given we had six ladies getting ready.
-
Everything was great except I wanted a room with a view of the city and all I got was the buildings and trees across the street.
-
Was kept clean, beautiful hotel not far from everything you need just overall a very nice place to stay conveniently located

Loved the location of the property, with plenty of free parking, convenient to public transportation into Chicago. The room had a kitchenette and washer/dryer combo, both of which were very nice to have. We didn't try the free breakfast but that's a great perk, too. It was clean and safe and we'd definitely stay there again.

Pros: Great to see the owners repurpose an elder care home into a hotel and they did a wonderful job. Parking was ample and free, which was a welcome plus considering charges at the other hotels. Property was meticulously maintained, with a back garden area that made you forget you were in a city area. Entire staff was extremely friendly and attentive to any needs. Restaurants were close, some within walking distance so you didn’t have to move car once checked in. Rooms, although quirky (bathroom door hits bed about 1/4 opened) were SUPER comfortable. The kitchen/living area was one of the best we have stayed at as it was well appointed with induction stove, apartment size fridge, washer/dryer and was perfect for two if you’re staying short or long term. Cons (if you even want to call them that!): Bedroom area was a little tight, but you can understand why if you think about what the suites were used for previously but I think they utilized the existing space extremely well—I’d rather be a bit tight for a king bed since room is only used for sleeping!! Shower—our biggest gripe—-you have a choice (at least in the unit we were in)—hot water, no pressure or cold water, great pressure—we found no in between but managed. Overall, The Gem, in our opinion is just that and will be our go to hotel for all of our future visits when we are visiting our daughter. We look forward to it!!

Some rooms are smaller than others. I recommend a King size bed with a suite
-
Perfect except for very small room (ok for one person only) and no reading lamp by the bed.
-
Staff was very friendly and everything was immaculate. The bed linens were thin and insubstantial. I ended up layering the extra sheets from the closet on top of the linens on the bed for extra warmth.
