An an easy 10 minutę walk from the station, don't let the building's 1960's exterior deceive you, the dinner was superb, way beyond expectations, served in your room, fresh, local ingredients, grilled fish and grilled Hida beef, sautéed local mushrooms with a 'mentaiko' sauce, fresh sashimi, another white fish sautéed in a French butter/'wa-fu' sauce, plus more imaginative concoctions in the kitchen that were excellent with two local sakes we ordered, the wonderfully dry 'Horai' and an exceptionally creamy 'nigorizake'. We savored our meal slowly over two hours and finished it with green tea and a walk to the onsen bath. Did I mention the new tatami mats in the room? What's not to like? You can pay for more luxury, but this was excellent value for money. Note that you will be sitting on the tatami while you eat, which may bother some people. The breakfast was also delicious, Japanese style, grilled local anago river fish, yudofu simmered in onsen water, Yama-imo and raw egg, dashimaki tamago, local sautéed mushrooms, tsukemono, miso soup, rice...mmmm. Nothing to complain about.

Hotel was dated room was very small and uncomfortable for us. Meals and big bath were okay.

amazing meals
-
Quiet location with a great view Did not like distance from town. Local bus service is infrequent. Taxi ride to hotel is costly.
-
We upgraded our room to a private balcony and onsen. It made our stay better. There is a need for upgrade.

Room was average. Dinner and breakfast were Kaiseki style, served in our room by a male Japanese speaking staff who took the trouble to Google translate all the different dishes to English. He was very polite. Driver who drove us to the train station on the day of check out was extremely accommodating n helpful. The ladies' public onsen .. The Rose Bath was quite nice but with very few flowers. Different from the photo in the hotel website with lots of flowers. Kisoya is relatively traditional and the front office staff speaks minimal English. We had to communicate through Goggle Translate. The open-air bath tub was small, enough for just 1 person. Unfortunately, the water was not hot, only lukewarm. The temperature was controlled by a device in the tub under water. You have to inform front office to increase the water temperature. The water is boiled and not natural spring water. The tatami was a 3 piece fold-up mattress, not a rolled mattress. It was hard and not comfortable at all. Only 1 pillow per tatami was provided. I messaged them twice in English and Japanese regarding shuttle bus pick up but received no reply from them. You can get a better place at their rate.

The lovely staff were helpful Through translation I was advised there were no non smoking rooms in the hotel. the room we got was a heavy smokers room far back corner of the hotel.. We got a new room after asking to be changed. Owners were very nice. I blame booking.com as a genius level where rooms are discounted the hotelier just hands over a crappy room as they are losing out. The same has happened again in Shin Osaka, a shocking room under an expressway

Rooftop onsen is supurb

The onsen is great and we loved the yukatas provided by the hotel. The staff of the restaurant was lovely. No room service.

Obsessed with the top floor public onsen, especially the outdoor. Both onsen pools are spacious and were never crowded. The indoor hot spring has fragrant flowers from 3pm to 10pm, an exceptional feature that will captivate any ladies. The toiletries were amazingly good. My hair was extraordinarily softened with the well known brand Tabibijin products. Room was very cosy in Japanese tatami design. Ample space, fridge and glasses available, hot water flusk ready and a set of yukata to make a foreigner feel closer to Japanese culture. Recommended hotel for Gero town. Nothing.
