a&o Hamburg Reeperbahn - Hostel

Disappointing

The accomodation is categorized as hotel and when filtering hotels in Booking.com, it appears as such. Yet it turns out to be a hostel with shares bathroom, which was not marked as such.

The price. I booked in the reseption at a Friday, so the price was more then double. Normally it’s 30 euro. You got what you pay for in this hotel: Nothing!! You almost go scared for the staff cause they are so grumpy. From resepeption, to bar, to cleaning staff. ABSOLUTELY terrible. The cleaningstaff was worst. The doors is make of paper and slamming all night. The rooms was DIRTY. I didn’t took pictures, but one can see that the handles at my bathroom was on clean for a long time. It was old old dirt around the sink. The second room i lived in was A LOT of dust under my bed. I go hungry in the nighttime and went down to the bar and ordered pizza. The MOST TERRIBLE PIZZA EVER!!!

It had ok water pressure, that was the only positive. I can't explain how bad it was. It was dirty, loud and hotter than the sun.

Room was clean, and all necessary things were present. We were able to convince the staff to change our room due to people smoking issues, even tho it took a few attempts, in the end third receptionist was kind enough to let us sleep in peace one night. I think this specific a&o might work well for those who travel for night entertainment. It's located very close to the night life of Reeperbahn which is totally cool if only rooms allowed to shut the windows. Unfortunately, it's not healthy to stay in such hot not air conditioned rooms with windows shut, but when you open the window not only sounds of Reeperbahn nightlife are in, but also smell. Our windows faced the bar entrance, and we could deal with the sound of it, but it was impossible to ignore people smoking at the entrance.

Nothing. From the pictures, the hotel looks decent, but in reality, the room was extremely dirty and in very poor condition. There was mold inside the shower and spiders under the bathroom sink. The area is also terrible, with homeless and sketchy people around at all times. The Wi-Fi was very poor as well. I also had to wait around 30 minutes at reception just to get access to the parking. There was only one person working while around 10 people were queuing. I understand that you shouldn’t have high expectations for a budget hostel, but at the same time, it’s unbelievable to charge $70 per night for a room this dirty and poorly maintained. The shower (which by the way had a broken door), was so unpleasant that I genuinely felt disgusted even taking a shower. The floor in the room is also not straight which makes even dangerous to walk and all the walls inside the room are either with holes, either scatched.

Value for money. Good breakfast. Decent wifi The location is bang in reeperbahn and it does feel unsafe in the area. The room felt a bit dark lighting wise.

Centrally located, cloae to public transport, and clean beds. Rough area, fine for solo travellers but wouldn’t be good for families. Smell from toilet. Some areas of the hotel are inaccessible for wheelchairs or require lifting of heavy bags up the stairs. VERY janky elevators that seemed in danger of breaking and require repair.
