We had a lovely stay in the centre of Gion - perfect for early morning walks without crowds and for getting to a lot of sights easily as a bus stop is about 300m and the metro about 400m away, and Gion is completely walkable. Our room was very large and in Japanese style. There was no shower in our room so we had to use the communal bath) which we loved, but at certain times the bath may be closed to accommodate travel groups) You have to love Japanese style accommodation and spend a lot of time sitting on the floor - I am used to it and I like it. As pretty much everywhere in Japan, accommodation was extremely clean. Quiet at night. A little bit of noise on the day time, there was a school class visiting - but that did not bother us at all. Nights were quiet. Wifi worked great. Communal bath was lovely after all day walking! All in all, I would stay there again, the location is definitely a strong point and it was quite comfortable. This is classed 4 stars and compared with other four star accommodation, a few things would have been better. The communal lobby, though clean, is a bit life-less. I think with a good decorator a lot more could be done with it - cosier communal seating, a nice coffee station, books to read, an area to eat, microwave etc. There was some tea and water available in the lobby and tea and a kettle in the room, but more choice of hot drinks in the room (there was only green tea which was not replenished) would have been nice, Fridge in the room would have been nice since breakfast is not offered and it would have been nice to cool drinks and store snacks/breakfast items overnight.

Nothing at all Poisonous toxic gasoline smell from gas heater. We all felt so sick we had to leave in half hour and book another hotel. Gion staff were 100% unapologetic & refused even partial refund to us. Booking.com was not able to help either. We lost money + had to incur added costs. So spare yourself. Do NOT book here. Most rooms don't even have showers in them.

Great Ryokan on the edge of the Gion district. Lovely ladies in the staff. Nice onsen. The excellent breakfast was made with attention for detail and served by a very lovely lady. We enjoyed our four day stay very much. Nothing

It was a good hotel! The room was very spacious but it lacked a fridge. The only thing that we didn't like was the fact that it is not written that the only way to take a shower (if you have a common bathroom) is to do it in front of other people in the public bathroom instead of having a door inside the common bathroom.

The Gion Shinmonso was an amazing and authentic Japanese experience. We really enjoyed sleeping on the futons on the tatami mats. Our room also came with 2 chairs and a small table sitting area, as well as a dining table with 6 chairs (Japanese style low to the ground). It was a fun and comfortable stay; and being in the Gion area of Kyoto was great. Walking to nearby sights was so easy.

Clean. The room was big. I arranged for a local transfer of my luggage as the hotel does not have availability for 3 nights. To my dismay they took my money and told me they could not do it and force me to return by 6pm as the hotel will close by then. A major disruption to our itinerary of the day

Very close to heart of Kyoto and train station. Very friendly and polite staff. Clean public bath and onzen. Very quite room. Window with river view. By far the hardest tatami bed I had in Japan so far which I was not used to sleep on. Room equipment was somewhat subpar. At least one could expect a tiny fridge for this room price. Breakfast plan was quite expensive.

Room was nice and spacious. Location was just perfect - you can reach easily all attraction with a walking distance. Onsen was very nice and well equipped. I feel that staying in this place added a lot to our Kioto experience ☺️ Adding water without plastic bottles somewhere in a hotel would be nice.

The property is unassuming from the outside, but inside it's quite modern and very clean. The rooms were huge for Japan, and the futons were actually incredibly comfortable! The bathrooms in the rooms were also super modern which was a nice surprise. They include yukatas and a cute little set. I unfortunately didn't get to try the Onsen but I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff is also very kind and attentive! One lady even helped us bring our luggage to our Uber!! Highly recommend this place! If I had to be nitpicky, I would say their elevators are very slow lol.

The staff tried their very best to communicate with us. They are polite and helpful. I think we asked if there is a restaurant within the hotel, they said no. But actually as we walked out in less than 10 mins. we would get shops and food. NIL

The location is Gion and it's conveient. The hotel has onsen and it's really good to soak in Onsen at the end of the day for the relaxation. Room is huge and it's traditional style.
