Matsui Honkan

Fantastic traditional ryokan with fantastic and friendly staff, beautiful rooms, and great location. We stayed In The garden room, which was peaceful. We loved having tea there in the morning. Perfect

Located in the heart of Kyoto, this onsen hotel is perfect after a day of shopping or sightseeing. Staff is super helpful. Breakfast in room in awesome.

Our family loved this convenient little slice of Japanese culture in the heart of Kyoto. They take hospitality seriously, the onsite bath is relaxing and more private than the traditional ones - so it's a nice experience for those who want to try onsen, but might be squeamish of a lot of other people. It's sometimes private. The cuisine was a highlight - they do a really nice job with breakfast. Overall, the central location near shopping and restaurants is good for foodies and people who want to browse Nishiki and see the Ninja / Samurai museum (which is both touristy, expensive, and worth it for kids). There are other areas you may want to stay on your first trip or if you're more temple oriented, but if you want to stay on this part of town, we had a wonderful experience.

I cannot say enough about Matsui Honkan. So many Ryokans in Kyoto, and we happened to stumble upon THE BEST. Staff was wonderful; rooms were so spacious and comfortable; lovely breakfasts; nice touch to have water and toiletries; I also enjoyed the onsen - very clean and peaceful. Many many thanks! Cannot think of a thing.

Our family loved the traditional Japanese hotel from the entrance to the room. The staff was so helpful with arranging our meals and taxis in the morning so we could continue our journey of Kyoto. Lived the rooms, amenities and traditional hot baths. Nothing-everything was perfect.

The service is impeccable. This was the best stay of my life. They treat you with so much kindness and respect, I don’t even know how to thank them. Especially the guy at the reception. We ordered dinner and breakfast in the room and it was just amazing. Our kids loved everything! The y have small yukatas and slippers for them. I truly recommend this place. Nothing, everything was exceptional.

The staff are so very friendly and kind. The facilities are clean and very intimate with so much consideration. The Onsen was the best and the breakfast outstanding. Highly recommend staying here

Very charming property, definitely worth the cost! Location is great, too. It is within walking distance to the shopping and downtown area, and there are plenty of things to do, see, and eat! Staff was extremely kind and helpful. The little amenity bags and chopsticks they gave us as souvenirs was a nice touch! My husband especially loved the onsen downstairs. I am more private and self-conscious — the large bathtub in the room was very enjoyable for me to soak in after a long day of walking. The room was spacious and comfortable with plenty of amenities, including yukatas to wear and a fridge with some complimentary beers. We are so glad we decided to stay at this ryokan. N/A

We loved everything about staying at Matsui Honkan and look forward to the next time we can visit. The whole property is well taken care of, with beautiful traditional features and peaceful classical music playing throughout. There is a high level of attention to detail with thoughtful touches, such as an origami crane to greet you, pjs to wear, and a special treat for our honeymoon. A true highlight was the incredibly kind and cheerful staff. They make this place truly special! We also loved the onsen, what a gorgeous place and a real treat. Best place we’ve ever stayed!

Location was excellent. Added the breakfast option which was incredible and delicious. Loved that breakfast was served in our room. Service was excellent. They were able to accommodate our request for additional services such as luggage forwarding and an additional night.

This might have just been our most comfortable stay ever. The rooms were convenient and clean and the staff was so helpful! The hotel is truly beautiful and provided a great authentic Japanese experience. We ordered the breakfast, which was served to our room. We also got a delicious welcome drinks and sweets. The staff was kind and explained evevrything to great lengths. We were allowed to use the beautiful clothes provided and were alllowed to bring the drawstring bag home with us. This ryokan was defenitely worth the stay and we will defenitely come back if we ever visit Japan again!
