This was such an amazing place to stay. Very small, so felt very personal. The staff were all so kind and helpful when needed. The location was first rate!! Quiet side street only steps away from Temples, Shrines, parks, restaurants, and the gorgeous streets of Higashiyama, while just minutes from the bustling downtown shopping district. While not a ryokan, it was definitely more traditional than a standard hotel. Shoes were not allowed anywhere in the building (there were lockers at the front desk to keep your shoes in), there was an amazing wood bathtub in the bathroom and bamboo mats on the bathroom floor. Our adult daughters, 21 and 26, liked this more than the modern, traditional hotels we stayed in while in Tokyo and Osaka. We would absolutely stay here again if we are ever back in Kyoto. And be warned, you will fall in love with the butter soft pajamas that are provided. Thankfully you can buy a pair from them, which we did!! Nothing

The room was fantastic and the bed very comfortable - loved having an authentic Ryokan experience - loved our little moss garden. It’s not close to any of the subway stations, making getting around more dependent on taxis unless you tack on a 20 min walk to and from each day.

The setting was beautiful and all that we wanted to experience in a traditionaltraditional Japanese Ryokan Nothing

Literally perfect!!! The staff, the location, the room amenities were amazing. I have never seen such a beautiful bathroom. I wish I could have stayed here for a few more nights because everything was EXCEPTIONAL! N/A zero complaints

The attentivenes and friendliness if the staff was amazing. The breakfast was simply one of the best I've had so far during our trip. The room was spacious, the beds comfortable and the bathroom was out of this world. The location it's unbeatable.

Amazing location and very charming. Excellent staff. Nothing. Great experience.

Great location! It’s right in the center but still very quiet. The hotel is clean and the staff are wonderful. I highly recommend it and will definitely stay here again.

The location, the aesthetics, the cedar bathroom, the breakfast After staying in other hotels in Japan, this one lacked a few small touches that we saw in other places. For example There were no places to hang towels in the bathroom. The tub was confusing to fill/ didn’t work as intended and the beds were uncomfortable. Not enough plugs by the bed for a light and two chargers etc.

This hotel is such a beautiful and peaceful experience. It’s in the heart of so much amazing cultural treasure, and so quiet and beautiful. The owner was so friendly and helpful, the traditional Japanese breakfasts were beautiful, and the bathtub/wet-room was exactly what we needed after long days of walking. Would DEFINITELY stay here again!! We had no problems getting cabs but some may not drive up the narrow streets. A little far from trains, but still easy to get around.

The location on a quieter side street of Gion is wonderful. The serenity makes it an oasis in what can be a crazy area. Amenities were awesome, and cleanliness was over the top. The Japanese breakfast was also very good, i only wish it had been changed up a bit - it was identical each day. If you need a lot of hand-holding, you may though prefer a real hotel — certainly the staff helps and will advise, but you won’t get lists of recommended restaurants or concierge-like services. And unless you walk or decide to take taxis everywhere, the closest public transit (bus) is about a 7-8 minute walk, which i quite enjoyed, but others may find it to be too much. All in all, however, highly recommended - I would go back, and I will recommend it to others since it can be very difficult to sort through the small inns in Gion. Thank you to the caring staff! One issue for me was that the common areas are kept astoundingly hot - I saw 25 degrees Celsius on one thermostat. And upon checkin i had to immediately crank down dramatically the temps in my room to survive!

Everything about this place was amazing. The staff were some of the kindest people- they made several adjustments to my dietary restrictions (vegan) and served us delicious traditional japanese dishes for breakfast (included in our stay), and they consistently were a delight to return home to each evening with smiles and warmth. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, the hinoki tub was a highlight for me. The location is also perfect and in the heart of one of the most beautiful and popular places in Kyoto!! I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Great location in Gion, very close to Yasaka Shrine. Down a quiet street, so you don't have to deal with the tourist crowds. All the temples and shrines in Gion are within easy walking distance. The property is cute and the owners are very friendly. There was nothing to dislike about the place!

Great place near all the best "to do's". Clean and traditional with comfortable western beds.

lovely complimentary breakfast, very friendly staff

Absolutely nothing could have been better

Very central location - which is both good and bad. Gion is overwhelmed with tourists, but early mornings were beautiful. And Chion-in temple and its garden seemed to be overlooked (and were great, and within walking distance). Seemed a little under-staffed. Everyone was very nice, but it’s not cheap, so I would have expected a higher level of service, like tea served in your room on arrival. Also, breakfasts were exceedingly simple compared to what we got elsewhere in Japan for the same price stay, and served in a common dining area as opposed to in-room. Maybe it’s just that everything in Gion costs more.

It was a great experience to stay in a Ryoken . Everything was impeccable in neatness . Very well located . Vegetarian breakfast should have been available. Though they gave us coupons for a restaurant outside , we missed eating in the Ryoken

You can't beat the location of this property. You walk out the door and right into the heart of Kyoto's Gion district. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The rooms were immaculate and the service from the staff was tremendous. Our room was tucked upstairs and had only a small window for natural light. I recommend checking with the property about your room before arrival.
