The only major issue was the lack of hospitality, but sadly that has tainted the whole stay. Every single time you enter or leave the ryokan, a guy appears to look at you; never once with a smile, no ounce of warm greeting whatsoever during morning or day or evening, just watching you take on/off your shoes. Maybe he means well but it comes across rude and one starts to dread the feeling of having to come back and be met with surveillance and cold stares... Instead of feeling relaxed and welcomed during the stay one starts to stress about this behavior. The place deserves a different receptionist or attitude. It was my only bad experience in Japan and the only place I wouldn't return to.

Great location, good room though feels dated, clean capable shared bathroom. Very quiet which made sleeping easy. Didn't see the other guests despite the somewhat small home. We arrived a an hour early, being foreigners and so not knowing exactly how long our travel that day would take us, but it reallyseemed to annoy the host unfortunately which didn't feel very welcoming.

Our host was very helpful, gave us all the information at the time of check in, even carried our heavy luggage into our room while we went out. The stay itself gave us an experience of how Japanese houses are. Not many stores near the area, had to walk about 6+ mins to grab anything, or walk all the way to the main station, about 15 mins from the stay.

Host is extremely friendly and welcoming. Room as well as shared area was clean and tidy. Although bathrooms are shared they are also really nice and clean. There are only few rooms, so shared facilities are sufficient. There is also a fridge and a washing machine/dryer available for use. Location is within walking distance of the main station and key sightseeing points. Nothing

Thus is likely a westerner issue, but the ceilings were very small - we bumped our heads a few times! Granted, were both tall people.

The house (Ryokan) is very old, and it was nice to stay in and experience authentic Japanese architecture and see something different from the hotels. The location is very convenient, and overall it was good value for money. The biggest downside for us was the curfew. You have to come back at 11:00 PM at the latest, as the host locks the property then, and you cannot come inside afterwards. This limited our experience a lot, especially since we were only visiting for a couple of days and were limited in time. We had no access to the garden, although it was one of the features that drew us to staying at the Ryokan and is advertised in its pictures. There are many rooms in the house, with other visitors/tourists, so you don't feel very private as the walls are thin and you can sometimes hear people in their rooms and cthe orridor. The toilets and showers are shared and were often occupied as all occupants get out/in roughly at the same time slots due to the curfew, and you are not allowed to use the showers after midnight. Both showers and toilets were very clean, though.

    Very good overall.

I truly appreciated the tranquility of the place and its authentic atmosphere—the flower-lined avenue stretching from the station to the ryokan, running alongside the majestic temple. The ryokan itself was a highlight, steeped in tradition, with a charming little garden and impeccable organization. The room was perfectly equipped, leaving nothing to be desired. And as for the futon—you get used to it surprisingly quickly. Check-in at 3 pm

This ryokan is amazing, it’s old school in the best possible way - the guy who runs it is so kind and attentive, the room was warm and quiet and cosy, plus it had a lot more space than other places we’ve stayed in Japan. We also had our best nights’ sleep of our trip here! It’s just great, we love it and we’d definitely stay again next time we come to Kyoto :) Nothing, it’s perfect!

This was our favourite place that we stayed in Japan! It was a beautiful house and room and it felt like a very authentically Japanese place to stay. Everything felt super clean and well organised, with green tea and dressing gowns in the rooms.
