The staff was very friendly and welcoming. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The rooms are traditional Japanese style rooms with tatami mats and futons (which were surprisingly comfortable) and the rooms were spacious. The bathrooms were compact, but well equipped. Facility has a washer and dryer available. Also has two public baths, one with a garden view that is very peaceful. Rooms have a mini fridge, Japanese tea, and a sweet treat each night. The Ryokan is located across from a temple, close to some beautiful gardens, and a 6 minute walk to Kyoto station. It was also only about a 25 minute walk to Gion. Highly recommend if you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience in a great location. I wouldn't really call this a negative as I knew what to expect, however, it took come getting used to not having a chair or something to sit on in the room. If you have mobility issues, this may not be a great option as the only place to sit is on the floor.

This was truly an unforgettable experience staying at this ryokan. The hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming, and the atmosphere was authentic and very cozy. The onsen was absolutely wonderful and provided the perfect place to relax. The food deserves a special mention – we booked both the kaiseki dinner and breakfast, and it was an experience we will never forget. Every dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. This is a place we highly recommend – a must-try!

From check-in to check-out, the staff of Yamadaya Ryokan were wonderful hosts. Upon arrival, we received a cup of tea and a full tour of the facilities and our room. Using phones and their translation device to communicate, we were given excellent recommendations for where to find cherry blossoms based on what sights we'd be visiting. On our first morning we enjoyed a delicious Kyoto-style breakfast. The public bath was very relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. I look forward to visiting again in the future.

Our stay at Yamadaya Ryokan was delightful! The Ryokan itself is beautiful, comfortable and spotless clean, but the highlight are its staff who went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed at every point during our stay. The breakfast was delicious, too!

The people we met who worked at the hotel were awesome! We had the dinner and breakfast meals and they amazing. Overall, the experience was great and one that we would come back for again!

Absolutely loved the hotel. The staff was gracious and attentive. The breakfast was amazing and worth much more than we paid for it. We travel a lot and the Yamadaya now has a place on our all-time favorites list. I’m struggling to come up with any negatives. Anything not meeting my expectations would really just be nitpicking cultural differences.

This Ryokan is a dream! My husband and I spent a night here for our honeymoon. The room was beautiful. We decided to book the traditional Japanese dinner too. It was an amazing experience. Staff is so kind, we loved them. We enjoyed the experience a lot and we really hope to be back!

Staying at ryokan was an outstanding experience for me and my wife. The stuff were extremely polite, positive, and helpful. They contacted us in advance to discuss and explain all the details and rules and suggest traditional dinner and breakfast (they should be booked in advance). The rooms are very convenient and clean, ours had a perfect view on Hongan-ji temple and sakura trees. We strongly recommend trying Kaiseki style dinner and traditional breakfast - a fascinating gastronomic and cultural experience. There are several hot baths in the facility, one them with a very nice garden view. Yamadaya Ryokan is located near the Kyoto station (10 minutes walk), just across the Hongan-ji temple and it was easy to reach Kyoto temples and gardens by bus or on foot. Overall, it provided much more than just rest and food, but also a dive into the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese hotel. It was a bit too hot in the room on a sunny day, but there is an air conditioner in the room to fix that.

Excellent location. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Everyone of the staff was amazing and extremely accommodating. The baths were perfect with delightful smelling soaps and a great view!

Personal service, friendly staff, attention to detail, convenient location.

  • Engine customer Mar 2026

The location was very convenient for our travels. We had no complaints although the timing of when each gender had access to the larger bath meant not all of us could enjoy it.

Absolutely stunning view from the room and outstanding hospitality. I’ve travelled a lot before but have been truly impressed. I’d definitely recommend and return when possible. Nothing really. Totally above expectations

The location is perfect. Very close to Temples and Kyoto Station. Plus a very good coffee and breakfast place, right next door. Amazing staff who go above and beyond to help, delicious food offerings, and of course the public onsen made it a place I would for sure stay again! Nothing!
