The Rock Hostel

Small intimate hostel located close to the centre of Matera, very friendly and helpful staff. Female dorm was clean and comfortable, with an aircon unit (although we did not use it during my stay). Great kitchen area. The only improvement point would be a slightly better pillow

Good communication and easy check in. Room was clean and comforatble. Also had laundry services available. I enjoyed my stay.

Everything was nice, from the room to the shared kitchen. I would stay here again. The unavailability of late check-in might cause a problem if you arrive in Matera later than 8:30 pm.

The best part is Peter - the manager cum receptionist - who takes care of you as if you were a guest at his own house. He is particular about keeping the hostel clean mopping it himself and making sure it is spotlessly clean. He is also super helpful. A great location / a short walk to the sassi. Great amenities - kitchen, cooking ware, fridge, microwave, hot water kettle. 3 hour cleaning time - when all guests need to step outside the hostel - can be massively inconvenient and could be reduced to half an hour at most to avoid common areas to clean kitchen/ reception areas so we need not be inconvenienced. After you clean common areas you could request guests to move to those common areas when you clean their room - not leave the hostel entirely. Otherwise you need to advertise this 3 hours (reduced from our stay time) before booking as part of hostel listing before ANY booking is made as per EU regulations. I have travelled over 106 hostels and never have been asked to leave ANY hostel for 3 hours everyday to clean when we have paid for access to stay. As a person with disability this massively inconvenienced me. I am not NOT complaining to booking team and leaving it at a high rating since Peter is awesome and makes up for this inconvenience.

The hostel is a 10 minute walk from the historic center. Everything was super clean and comfortable. I also can't say enough great words for the staff.

Staff was very friendly and gave wonderful advice about things to do, including a couple places to hike off the regular path, and a big discount on the biggest cave museum. Kitchen area was great with free tea all the time. Beds are comfortable. Staff is not there from 1200-1500, so if you want to leave your things after check out, you have to take them with you or come back much later. Not a problem if you plan ahead, but something to be aware of.

Great location, within a few minutes walk from the sassi. The staff was also nice and helpful. The main thing I didn't like was the bathroom situation which made the whole stay uncomfortable. The shower cabin door was mostly see-through so no privacy at all and it didn't have any lock. Also there was no toilet seat. I understand that it being a hostel means sharing with others but I would have appreciated a lock on the shower door and it not being see-through. If the bathroom situation was better I would have given the hostel a 9 or 10.

Peter in the front desk was so friendly and helpful. Super clean facility. Location is good. Price is amazing in a place like Matera. Don't miss out!!! There was no AC, which is perfect for me because in a shared room it is always a problem to decide on the degree and program. I have become ill because of that before.
