The Local - Hostel

Good location, helpful staff and really comfortable bed.

The staff was very helpful. There was a problem with the toilet one day, but it got fixed very promptly. There was nice live music There was another customer every in the communal area making lot of noise and no one from the staff let her know. It was very uncomfortable from the rest of the travellers.

Long operating hours I encountered a racist front desk employee during my stay at this hostel. She appeared to be in her 30s to 40s, Hispanic with black hair, and clearly treated guests differently based on their background — completely unacceptable in a hospitality setting. The other issue was a young woman with long black hair and heavy eyeliner who was on duty the night of the NBA Finals. She was extremely impatient and had a terrible attitude toward guests — she seemed like a work-exchange volunteer staff member who simply had no motivation to provide decent service. Overall, the staff professionalism here is seriously lacking. Would not recommend until management addresses these issues.

The front desk staff was very kind and welcoming. The building was well-maintained and clean. Other than hot water not coming out from the shower during my first day, I would say I thoroughly enjoyed my experience (they quickly resolved the issue though). Staying at the hostel is also a great way to meet new people since you share a room with others. The hostel puts on a lot of events as well. For example, when I was there, the Knicks were playing in the finals, so they played the game in the lobby. It was a very lively environment since people from outside the hostel also came to watch the game. Overall, I would highly recommend this hostel.

one day after i back to room at night, I took off my cloth and would like to take a shower. But after 10 min cold water, I have to take back all the dirt cloth and go the front desk to ask what happened. And front desk just told me they do not have hot water that night, hot water will back next day morning. So i took a cold water shower that night and no one said sorry to me. I wont come back in the future.

Staff was great, except for the morning bartender who would look at you as you ordered coffee like you were disrupting her day. Everyone else was exceptional, though. Shout out to Ronald, from the front desk and the Colombian guy from the bar during afternoons and nights. Room was too small for the amount of beds. 6 beds where there should have been 4 (4 was probably the original plan, since there were only 4 hangers on the wall). The AC was extremely loud but, even worse, it kept turning on and off so as soon as you were used to the sound, it would go away (or restart) on an infinite cycle. This would happen at any temperature. There was also no hot water. I had to take cold showers every morning.

I’m a return visitor and The Local is my favorite spot now. Super clean and professional.

The staff were efficient and helpful, even giving me recommendations for places to go. I was able to store my luggage with them before check in and they provided a lock for my under bed storage which was a life saver. It was extremely convenient to have a bar and cafe on site for down time between activities, and the common spaces, room, and bathrooms were all clean and comfortable. I was not expecting the AC in the room which was a welcome surprise! There are 3 subway stations (that I used) within walking distance, plus lots of delis, convenience stores, restaurants, and a park nearby as well. I felt safe and comfortable for my entire stay. Well worth the price!
