La Devinière

Charming inn with lots of historic character. Little guidance on restaurants, etc. The owner only speaks French.

No parking to unload bags.

We thought the breakfast was too expensive.

Charming Inn in great location. Very comfortable bed and linens. Lovely garden and common rooms to enjoy. Favorite stay on our week in Basque area.

Beautiful, peaceful and exceptionally clean and quiet Liked everything

La Devinière was everything we could have hoped for and more! The host was a very hospitable man. The breakfast was delightful! Coffee, juice, and a multitude of pastries in an exquisite private garden area. Location was in the very city center, no more than 5 min walk to the beach and all of the sites. I have nothing negative to say!

A perfect place to stay. This small boutique hotel is filled with antiques and books. There is a lovely back garden where one can sit and read. Our room was spacious with a small terrace where we had a lunch of goodies we bought at the market. A elegant place run by a lovely gentleman and his wife who were helpful, giving us guidance and suggestions for our route traveling in the French Basque countryside. Our continental breakfast of excellent croissants, pain chocolates and a baguette with butter and jam along with juice and cafe au lait helped us start our day with a smile on our faces. A 5 star stay for us!! Nothing

Hosts made it clear that we should consider their home ‘our home’ so we made lots of use of their patio and garden, also their kitchen. We enjoyed a meal we pulled together from local gourmet shops on their patio. They provided us all of the comforts. Location was wonderful for access to everything. Loved walking to the beach in the evening.

My experience at La Devinière was outstanding, and I was very sorry to have to leave. The guesthouse is charming and Monsieur Carérre makes every guest feel immediately at home. Guests are free to come and go as they please and have access to most of the building, including the kitchen; breakfast is served in the lovely back garden, or in the dining or living room in case of rain. Guests often take advantage of the couches to relax and read, and numerous books in French are available--including two of the owner-author's travel guides to parts of France. Impromptu conversations are common and frequently accompanied by wine. Rooms are furnished with traditional French/Basque furniture, framed art, and antiques so one feels, again, as though one is a guest in a delightful home rather than a hotel. Shelves throughout the building are full of mementos from M. Carérre's family; art and old books abound. Bathrooms are well equipped and lighting is good. There are several shops in the area, and many guests enjoyed shopping in them, and swimmers don't have far to walk to enjoy the beach. There is an elevator for anyone with mobility problems or guests who arrive "home" weary from a day of exploring. There was nothing about La Devinière I didn't like. Unfortunately, tendinitis in my foot sometimes made it difficult for me to walk to dinner since most of the desirable restaurants are farther down the beach closer to the center of town. Guests with mobility difficulties may want to keep that factor in mind, but taxis can be called if needed. Fortunately for me, there was a boulangerie right across the street that had good sandwiches I purchased when walking was problematic.
