Onsens are good... But small On the 1st floor, you have enough space to meet and gather if you travel with your family or friends (very convenient). It was summer when I visited it. And it was a good one, but very few restaurants were open in Zao Onsen (meaning you have to anticipate, and if do not - I didn't - you can still rely on Lawson's convenient store) We had the chance to visit different Ryokans in Zao, and by visiting them, I realized this one is not the one I would recommend first, if you would like to have an amazing Ryokan experience. Lastly, during peak season (winter), the place must be overcrowded and I do not think you can truly enjoy Onsens, as they are not very large.

Location was very good, room was very big! We originally booked for 5 people, but had to made a light change of plan and changed to 3 people. The hotel was nice enough to accommodate the change and charge us for 3 people instead of 5. Thanks a lot~~ The common area had the fewest available service among all the hotels that we stayed in Zao Onsen. I guess this was reflected in the room charge since it was also the cheapest among all.

We loved the staff, location and the Onsen on site. Zaq Onsen itself is a great location and the hotel was close to everything we needed. We had no dramas at the hotel. Potentialy a hotel coach may have been helpful as the bus station is a bit of a walk in the snow.

Spacious room. We really loved the tatami Japanese-style room. Although the booking mentioned a shared bathroom, there was actually a private toilet and bathroom inside the room, which was a pleasant surprise. The indoor onsen is open 24 hours and is wonderful. The hotel is warm and cozy, perfect for colder weather. Guests can use the onsen facilities at other hotels within the same group (we didn’t end up using it, but it’s nice option) The hotel looks a bit old, though it’s still well-maintained. No in-house restaurant, but this wasn’t an issue for us. The outdoor onsen is time-segregated for men and women, which can be inconvenient if you specifically prefer outdoor baths.

Location and value Onsen could use some improvements, a bit old

Spacious rooms, tattoo friendly onsen, spacious break room, kitchen amenities, accessible laundry, spacious heated drying area for snowboard gears.

Room and facilities were clean. The location was great Photos make it look nicer than it is. I was a little misinformed because the reservation said private bathroom but when I arrived I learned that does not include a shower
-
Large lounge Very clean The hours of the open air onsen makes it so that you can't go in there on the afternoon if you are a man (reserved for women). Would be nice if they switched the hours around every other day, but that's just a personal preference.

My friend and I loved staying here. This hotel is part of a larger group of hotels, so you have access to those bath areas as well as part of an “onsen tour”. It’s very fun to walk around town and explore the different bath setups! The baths on-site are also well-maintained, and we were able to enjoy a bath while the snow fell. The hotel staff were also personable and helpful. They picked us up at the bus station, gave us local recommendations, and explained about the different hot springs. They even switched between Japanese and English depending on what we wanted to speak at the time. Our room was comfortable and surprisingly large, and warm despite the snow outside. Zao Onsen was an easy 45 minute bus ride from Yamagata City, and this hotel only a 10 minute walk from the bus station. My friend found it very straightforward to get to all the way from Tokyo. It’s also well-situated to walk all around town, whether you need to head up the mountain or down the mountain. We were there during the quiet season between autumn colors and ski season, so it was a tranquil experience. No complaints! I do recommend calling for the pickup service when you first get in with your bags. The walk to the hotel is straightforward, but trickier in the dark and with extra weight.

Great location at Zao Onsen. Nice Onsen at hotel, public one down the street and a great one up the road in the woods ( Zao Onsen Rotemburo) Nothing
-
Facilities in good condition good relaxation room /onsen Feel not a warm welcome, need service minded not only get job done

The room was spacious, clean and nice. The view from the window was charming. The onsens, both outdoor and indoor, were great, comfortable and nice. The whole hotel is a pleasant place to relax.

The walk up to the rope way was a bit longer than expected and uphill. Still very close just not quite as convenient as ski in/ski out.

Hotel did provide pick up service from bus terminal which is an advantage. Staff san was helpful. You can enjoy free onsen in other 7 hotels, just let the receptionist know you are hotel guest. This is a very old hotel. The tap water took times to come out.
