Lovely location, the “green” architecture of the hotel is amazing, staff very kind and great breakfast and drinks A wonderful place ;-)

Some of the wood elements on the exterior were starting to feel a little worn out and are in need of maintenance.

The design and decor are undeniably beautiful and the vibe of the place very relaxing Unfortunately the level of service is very underwhelming for the level they wish to position themselves as and for the rate they charge, and there is a lot of room for improvement (this or it has deteriorated since it was recommended by the guide du Routard...). The WiFi was very spotty the whole time and even cut since 9pm for more than 12 hours. The pool area was dirty, with chairs clearly not swept for days, and a net should be used to clean moss, dead insects, and other filth deposited in the pool, which clearly also had not been done for days. I ordered a bottle of wine through their room service app, got the confirmation, waited around 40 mn until closure time and nothing ever came (and I could not even verify that I could not be charged for it since their WiFi was still down when I checked out...). Free rental bikes are available to borrow - great initiative, but when I asked for one, I was told none of them had air in the tires, so unusable. In the end, other clients took it upon themselves to take 2 bikes to a gas station to pump them. But I do not recommend them: they are old, worn bikes with an extremely heavy frame that makes them very tiring to maneuver and almost as slow as if you were walking. Do not expect to tour along the whole lagoon with them. On the one I had (no. 4), the right brake did not work, and the left one barely. Also, many of them had lost their little number placard (see attached picture). Overall, it is clear that this place does not invest in the maintenance staff that is needed to achieve, or maintain, the level of service they aspire to and try to project. Perhaps it is because now (early June) is not what is considered peak season in Bacalar, but that is also an issue : you should provide the same level of service regardless of the time of year or the number of clients present (especially, again, when you charge $120 USD per night).

The pool was a huge disappointment because it was not clean. The pool needs a deep cleaning. The grounds also are not maintained. Someone should clean the grounds daily. The rooms are very dark.

Conveniently central. Great amenities and things for guests to use So many mosquitoes

I loved the tranquility and good vibes of the place. It is perfectly located, just one block from the lagoon.

The yoga in the morning that is included in your stay if you’re interested and even if you’re not interested check it out to stretch. The instructor is great! Rent bikes- they have plenty. A restaurant/coffee/bar/spa spot which I didn’t try but liked knowing the convenience of it being available on site if I needed. The reception team provided suggestions for food, activities and etc at your request or inquiry. The room and aesthetic of Casa Hormiga has me wanting to come back and stay there again and again. The bikes- just needing to figure out which of the few were not functional. The seats not dropping even after I tightened it. If you search you’ll find one that works

Very clean hotel, with plenty of greenery in the garden areas. Very confortable room, nicely appointed. Great food in the restaurant, with books and board games in common room. Most of the staff was very nice and helpful. The garden areas have dark areas, with steps that you cannot see at night. The front desk has limited hours. The cleaning staff will help you if something comes up, but half the front desk staff will say "that is your problem; these are our hours". The dealbreaker for us was that the prices are in US dollars (as a mexican traveling within Mexico, I find it offensive), and the tip was added to the restaurant bill (which is illegal, as far as I know). We spent three days in Bacalar and this was the only restaurant, coffee shop or tour operator where this happened.

The staff was amazing and attentive, very genuine and fun to talk to! There were some creature comforts missing that we didn't realize (TV, had to ask for a hair dryer, body soap, wash clothes), but they were able to accommodate for most of the things we needed.

It is beautiful, you feel like if you are in an oasis

  • Engine customer Feb 2026

Stunning architecture and furnishings. Beautiful, peaceful, an oasis. The staff, drinks and food were all fabulous! Live music and dogs in the street behind interrupted our sleep.

I liked the friendly staff and the large room with rustic design I didn’t like that the reviews for this property are over rated. The room was outdated and in bad shape. The area rug was dirty. The safe did not work and the toilet seat was all worn down. The front door could not be properly locked. The curtains would not cover the whole if the front entrance leaving little privacy.

Very nice and clean within walking distance to the lagoon. I love everything about casa Hormiga

The poor staff at breakfast are overwhelmed. Hotel really needs to expand the service.

  • Engine customer Dec 2025

Great location! Free bicycles. Loved the room design Breakfast was a little bit of a chaos because all the guests arrived at 08:00 at the same time and ordered their food by yelling at the waiter. He should have told them to stay at their tables and he would take their orders then. We just left without breakfast

Stunningly beautiful hotel, amazing location and facilities. Yoga classes are included, stuff is very friendly, massage is amazing . It really gave me the break I needed The only thing I found so-so in the hotel was the food - they’re trying to be fancy but it wasn’t very tasty. However it was a minor thing, everything else is amazing

Location and free bikes Staff nonchalant and reluctant to actually do anything. Everything felt like too much trouble. Breakfast was cold everyday and no robes in room

The facilities are great. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and stylish. The complimentary yoga each morning was a great way to start the day. The pools were a bit cold for my taste.
