Areca Hotel Penang

We booked the ground floor heritage room, which was airy and expansive. Each of these rooms is an old shopfront and they are deep and high-ceilinged with acres of space for relaxing. A small outdoor section in the covered atrium was a cute extra and the whole feeling of the hotel was conducive to relaxtation. It's only a short distance from the heritage area of George Town so it's easy to walk to and from there. Breakfast had enough variety to keep everyone satisfied, and there is a complimentary afternoon tea that we used once. Cold water in the foyer to refresh you when you return from a hard day's touristing was a nice touch. Beds were comfy, and bathroom well maintained and spacious. Staff were super friendly and helpful. I'd come again. Some noise from the street at night, but only occasionally and not enough to make you lose sleep. Complimentary earplugs are available from the front desk if this, or the morning call-to-prayer, is an issue for you.

The Hotel is a beautifully renovated group of colonial buildings and exuded charm & warmth. Full of character. The room was spacious and well appointed. Daily breakfast was substantial and our greeting was always met with a smile. A special mention of Yahfiz. Truly delightful. The daily afternoon tea was an unexpected treat. Nothing. All positive

The uniqueness of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. A lot of shops and eateries around the hotel, but crossing the road is quite challenging. Anyway, that’s the case for all the roads in Penang.

This is a nice boutique style hotel in Georgetown. Staff is very nice and willing to help you understand the area. Room is clean. They have tea time midday where they provide tea coffee snacks and ice cream. Elevator is slow but you can take the stairs. Rooms are small but maybe that is expected for rooms in downtown areas. There is some construction noise but they are willing to provide ear plugs

staff were very accomodating; we only stayed the one night and they ensured that we had breakfast (in a box) as we left very early. It was very much appreciated! We also really enjoyed our afternoon tea. Our only slight challenge was that the room was warm; otherwise we had a wonderful stay and would definitely return.

The hotel feels quite dated. We stayed for two nights, in two different rooms. The first room came with complimentary mosquitoes. After first night, we discovered the window handle was broken, so closing it properly was more of a suggestion than an option. We asked to move and, to their credit, the staff quickly relocated us. The second room, however, was directly above the dining area — which means your day starts at 6:30 whether you like it or not. If you’re planning to sleep in, bring earplugs. If not, you can head downstairs and enjoy what might be the most British-style breakfast you’ll find in Asia, leaning heavily toward the milder side when it comes to flavor. And the coffee? Let’s just say it’s essentially hot water with a vague memory of coffee.

Areca Hotel Penang blends restored pre-war charm with modern comfort — set in a row of elegant shophouses within walking distance of historic streets and hawker favourites. My Garden Room was compact but comfortable, featuring cool terracotta floors, strong air-conditioning, and reliable Wi-Fi. The leafy courtyards and complimentary afternoon tea made it a relaxing base after exploring Penang. Friendly staff, thoughtful amenities, and a calm atmosphere make this hotel a lovely retreat for those who appreciate history and character. There are mosquitoes in my room.

Their service was very nice. The location is surprisingly so good, very close to many tourist spots in Georgetown. My room has many mosquitos. The window in the bathroom is not fully sealed. Thankfully the hotel staff provided electric mosquito repellent to me for the rest of my stay. The Garden room is smaller than expected.
