Best onsen experience ever

There was nothing we didn't like it was a great experience

A genuinely charming hotel. The architecture, garden, and riverside setting are beautiful. At check-in, staff walk you through the history of the property, including the imperial visits, which sets the tone well. Service throughout was attentive. Breakfast was excellent. The traditional yukata they provide to wear around the property is a nice touch that pulls you into the spirit of the place. Two small notes. Room amenities felt inconsistent with the overall positioning: towels, toiletries, and in-room details were below what the property suggests. Second, we booked a room with a private onsen but in hindsight the standard rooms in the historic building combined with the communal onsen would have been the better choice, both for value and for the experience of staying in the more characterful part of the hotel.

Our room was large and had a great view of the hills from our room as well as the in room onsen. The public onsens were among the best we experienced in Japan. The building and grounds were lovely to wander. While the property was beautiful, it seemed a bit tired in places/

Old country style Difficult to find direction

Everything, this place was amazing. The food was excellent, room was very nice and the hotel is gorgeous. The hot springs were beautiful and traditional. We really enjoyed it. It's about 10 minutes drive into the town so if you plan to stay for several days youll want to ask about transport back and forth but it's perfect for an overnight or two night stay without leaving the hotel. There was a mix of local vacationers and international tourists so that was also pretty cool. A bit annoying that they dont make your bed until the evening so if youre tired and want to nap early you have no bed in the room. Maybe you can request it before hand but I wasnt aware of that process.

We had a bit of a wait to check in but we got to pick our yukata while we waited so it worked out.

The atmosphere and the layoutbof the building is intriguing. The onsen is beautiful and satisfying. Nice meals as well. Also the staff is very welcoming.
-
It was up on a hill which was nice. The omakase meal had some delicious courses and some just okay. The presentation was very beautiful! It was musty and a bit moldy smelling. It definitely needs updating for how much it charges. We paid for a room with a private onsen only to realize it was just a bathtub for one person.

Everything was amazing, and the service was excellence.

Everything was perfect! The shuttle to/from Gero station was so convenient and easy to find. The check-in procedure was smooth and available in English. A delicious kaiseki dinner was served in my room, and breakfast was in a large dining room with a table waiting for me. The public onsen was so relaxing, and my room had a bath with a window that opened. My room was spacious, quiet. and so comfortable with a treetop view. Of course, the service was excellent in every way.

The property has history and a good location. The foreign staff is sadly inferior to the outnumbered Japanese staff. Japan has always attracted us to the warmth, mindfulness and discipline of its people. We still saw that in the older members of the staff and in a young man from the Fukuoka who took us to our room and checked us in. But the foreign members of the staff clearly were there just for the job and they didn’t do a good one at that. Add to that the lack of amenities in the onsens and the unremarkable breakfast offering. Disappointing.

Extremely authentic Ryokan built in the 1930s — it felt like going back in time. Gorgeous architecture and the baths were so relaxing and beautiful. Wish there was an opportunity to reserve a private outdoor bath coed — hard to be a couple here.

Everything was very beautiful and serene No complaints

I liked everything about the place it exceeded my expectations of what I thought a good hotel could be. It will probably have been the nicest place Ive stayed ever. I dont think I have any suggestions for improvement

It was historical and unique, lots of places and areas to discover. The staff were excellent and the food was delicious especially the Hida beef! They were so welcoming and helped us to celebrate our wedding anniversary well ? Overall it was great, it was just a little bit complicated to find different areas in the building
