The food is excellent

Absolutely lovely stay. Room was so spacious, had a beautiful courtyard area, and loved the onsen - it truly felt like a magical experience. I was debating between this place and the more historic/traditional Yunoshimakan but I am so glad I picked Kawakamiya Kasuitei - it felt like only locals were staying here and it wasn't on a steep hill so it made access so much easier for my elderly mom. The staff were kind and gave us complimentary tea, as well as a welcome "food" and dessert. We loved the private and public onsen because the water was so clean (felt like a true mineral mountain spring water). Out of the 5 nights that we spent across Takayama, Gero and Nagoya, this place was hands-down the best and very worth it for the price. Loved the traditional Japanese breakfast - it made us very full until dinner! n/a

The staff are very attentive. Facility is very well equipped, enjoy the stay very much. Love the inroom outdoor bath so much Most of the staff cannot speak basic English at all so it’s quite hard to communicate

Staff was exceptionally kind and understanding despite our limited language skills. The outdoor onsen was very comfortable, and the room was wonderful to stay in. It was a little confusing to navigate into town for dinner based on the map provided, but that probably says more about my own ability to find my way or follow instructions.

The staff was very welcoming and contacted us prior to our arrival concerning dietary preferences, yukata sizes, etc. They allowed us to drop off our bags quite early on in the day so we could sight-see without lugging everything with us all day. We were extremely fortunate to have a wonderful staff lady to help us navigate the facilities and make us feel very much at home. She called us when it was time for our meals, took the time to explain all the various dishes, ensured we had a taxi available for our departure, and saw that our luggage was loaded when it was time to check out. The taxis booked were free of charge which was a lovely touch and the entire staff saw us off as we drove off. My husband and friends will be talking about this wonderful experience for the rest of our lives We left the bath door open for a little bit to enjoy the sounds of the private onsens streaming water before bed and unfortunately the cypress bath had some odor (probably mold which makes sense given the wood tub and constant water flow) quarternary ammonium salt would probably help with this issue.

We really enjoyed our stay. Our room was quite big and had a view of beautiful trees and the mountain, beyond. We opened the doors and could listen to the rain through the screens. We loved the private, reservable onsen and used it both nights. The staff was very courteous and the breakfast was very delicious and served in a private room. They even provided a taxi to and from the train station to the hotel! Highly recommended!

Received a very warm welcome as we drive into the parking lot till we leave the car park. Fantastic hospitaility from all staff Private parking lots Convenient to the near by attractions Flexible to accommodate our diet requirements for no beef Nonetheless, the dinner and breakfast meals are awesome Our room reservation comes with private onsen where it is located outside of our room and requires reservation. Besides that, nothing else we dislike about.

Nice room, nice food, very nice hot spring water! Every time we got out of the ryokan we had to give them our room key and then when we got back to the ryokan they showed up with my key suddenly, smoothly. It’s ok but a bit strange too. Meaning, it wasn’t comfortable. The private outdoor bath needs reservation(once per day, only for afternoon) but after we checked in there was no availability. We stayed 2 nights so we could use it just one time.

Exceptional

Great traditional-style Ryokan. Walking distance from the town and there is on site parking. Large, clean rooms. Ample meals. Both an indoor and outdoor public bath. Right next to a flowing river. Very pleasant staff. The only things some people might not like is more of a clash of Western tastes with traditional Japanese bedding and cuisine so not really a minus in my eyes.
