ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto by IHG

Great location right across from Nijo Caste; paid (a lot) extra for castle view room which was a little disappointing as it was a limited view partially obstructed by the lower floors of hotel. Despite advertised numerous in house restaurants, they required booking ahead and very limited opening hours. Chose this hotel based on several earlier visits many years ago, but decor becoming very dated although still functional bathrooms etc.

This was a great location for Kyoto exploration, very easy to get a cab anywhere you wanted to go, very easy walking in the area with the castle right across the street. Excellent Ramen right around the corner and good coffee/breakfast spot right down the street. Lawson's and 7/11 just a few minutes walk away. My family got two adjacent rooms on the 8th floor, they were very, very nice. The best rooms we stayed in at 4 different hotels over a two week trip. Would stay here again. Very impressed. Not applicable, everything was great.

Nice location. A bit quiet and close to train and right opposite the castle. Also easy to get to the golden pavilion. Pool could definitely need a make-over. Looked so old, painting gone in so many places and not very inviting overall. Also we had a room where the window couldn’t open so there was a horrible smell of mold or similar. Very friendly staff gave us a new room.

Great staff. Great location. One misgiving was the beds could have had firmer mattresses and more solid bed frames. Another Huge oversight was the fact that there were NO hooks on which to hang the bath towels. Thus we needed new towels every day. A simple hook or two would have allowed us to dry our towels without the need to replace them each day. Other than that - we enjoyed the hotel very much.

The bathroom had a very odd odor. It was a mixture of mildew (from the shower curtain that needed to be replaced) and a random fart. The staff was exceptional, EXCEPT a female cashier/ check out lady. She seemed rude on a couple of occasions.

Five minutes walk to the subway. There is free shuttle to JR station (fixed timetable). Room looked old but was clean and cozy; the water from shower heat up very fast and the pressure is enough. The staffs were fluent in English. The mattress was too soft and my back hurt a bit after lying for a night.

Great location, shuttle taking you from the hotel to the Kyoto station for free, taxis always outside the hotel. Breakfast buffet was great and the view of the waterfall just outside the window was amazing. The staff were help and friendly. First room I was given on the night of arrival was on a smoking floor and due to it being bank holiday in Japan I was told the hotel is fully booked and the room could not be changed. I therefore had no option but to sleep in a room that smelled like an ashtray. I was provided with a portable air conditioner so I could sleep. Next room I was moved into had terrible noise coming through both walls - sounded like an engine or washing machine - terrible! Then there was this huge insect in my room which I thought was Japanese cockroach but I was assured by the staff it was not. I was moved to another room thereafter and this one was lovely - sadly I moved here on my last day. I definitely would not recommend this hotel. It could use a renovation and is simply not worth the price.

The concierge were extremely helpful! We were allowed to cloak our luggage for the whole day, which allowed us to spend the morning and early afternoon at Nijo without having to worry about our luggage. We didn't know if we would make Nijo or not, so we hadn't booked our skinkansen back to Tokyo ahead of time. The concierge went above and beyond with organising our Yamato luggage forwarding, helping us make the best decision on where to forward it as it wasn't being sent to another hotel. Turns out there was actually a Yamato within walking distance of our stay and we had no idea Also the view over Nijo castle was amazing! Was really cool to be able to see the staff setting up before opening time, and view the night time illumination

Maybe a bit more help in locating tours for first-time visitors

The view, beautiful room and Denis was a legend, so polite and helpful. Nothing.

Spacious bed room It took almost 45 minutes for check-in. Even I show the booking from Booking.com and they still couldn't get it. Beside the mail show that each room stay 2 persons and they insist there is only one guess shown

The Waterfall through the glass was Fabulous!!!! Location was right across the road from the entrance to the Castle which was really great. There were 2 x double beds in my room but unfortunately both of the mattresses were old and in need of renewal, and I had bad back ache from them.

The original room was a standard king it was unrenovated and poor quality I expressed my issues with staff and had to pay extra for a renovated room I would not stay here again

Staff was kind and very helpful. Also had a very convenient shuttle service that we used. Our room was very outdated. The carpet was old and stained, bathroom had mold in the corners and around fixtures. Others in our party had better rooms so we wished we asked to be moved to a better room. We were also told we had to pay to use the pool.
