Kyoto Ryokan Gion Sano

This property is exactly what we were looking for in Kyoto! The staff were so welcoming, the traditional rooms and beds were comfortable, and the location was excellent in Gion.

Family were very attentive and even repeatedly dropped off food and water. They have three adorable labs who are very friendly. Decor is a little dated, but didn't affect our stay. Very mom and pop type place which we liked but may not be what some are looking for.

Amazing location right in Gion, very walkable. The rooms themselves are very simple, with mattresses and seats on the floor. The family staff is amazingly friendly, and brought a fruit snack to our room every afternoon! They also did our laundry for us, and helped us forward our luggage to our next stop (we were hiking the Nakasendo trail). And the provided fresh bottled water any time we ran out. Great service.

Our family of four had an amazing stay. The location was perfect, located in the heart of Gion and walkable to key sights in Kyoto. The traditional Ryokan, with futons on the floor was a fun experience. The family that owns the Ryokan thought of every detail, so kind and welcoming. We loved the dogs too!

I had such a lovely stay here! I felt so taken care of throughout the week. Every day they left fresh fruit in the fridge for me, and when my suitcase broke they even got out a drill and ziptied it together for me! The family was very kind and the dogs were so cute. This was one of my favorite places I've ever stayed in, and I hope to visit again soon! Thank you :)

It was a family run ryokan and the whole family was so lovely and hospitable. The room was very clean and comfortable. They also left fruits for me to enjoy at the end of each day. Loved my stay and would be happy to go back.

The location in Gion was excellent for me. I could walk pretty much everywhere or walk to a bus/train station I enjoyed the traditional room and very much appreciated the tea and fruit on arrival and the sweet treat they left in my room each night. They also did some of my laundry. The staff/family were lovely. It’s a shame they don’t have an onsen or some kind of hot tub even. This place would be a 10 with an on-site ability to soak after a long day.

I loved the location and the homey feel there. The staff were incredibly friendly and brought me snacks and fruit everyday. It was a super cozy space just for me with the nicest view of the neighborhood. They even did my laundry for me. The dogs were so adorable too!

Location No hot water in the morning despite running it for 10 minutes. No air conditioning on when I arrived and it was sweltering. Laminated restaurant suggestions not accurate. Not enough English speaking staff to support guests.

Staff was incredibly welcoming. Location is fantastic and very central. They had a free Meiko show in the hotel which was a plus. Room was very charming and spotless. They provided fresh fruit for desert everyday along with other little snacks. Will stay again if I’m ever back in Kyoto. Nothing.

This ryokan is amazing! The owners are the sweetest people and they go out of their way to be kind and helpful, as well as provide their guests with tasty treats and fruits to eat. The ryokan is extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. We booked the superior twin which was huge. The room was so soothing and relaxing just to hang out in. The ryokan is in an excellent location in Gion, close to wonderful restaurants and temples. It is on a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. We didn’t want to leave. It was an excellent choice, and ticked off all the boxes for us in terms of what we were looking for in a traditional Japanese style inn. We’d highly recommend this place, and the couple have the sweetest most loving dogs! Nothing

I stayed at Kyoto Ryokan Gion Sano, and it truly felt more like a home than a hotel. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. They even hosted a Maiko performance with complimentary drinks — such a special experience. I also used their luggage delivery service for my next stay, and they kindly called my next hotel to inform them in advance. Everything was handled with great care. I highly recommend this place. As they say in Kyoto, “Okini!” ?

The cutest ryokan at an affordable rate with the most wonderful staff! Great location and the most hospitable service is provided. Not only did they include a maiko show, but they provide free snacks, pastries, water, and fresh fruit every day. Truly felt at home here and felt like a cherished guest.
