Location is right in the middle of Gion old town, staff was super nice, food was delicious and very good value. Only stairs so you have to hand carry your luggages upstair. Time for breakfast is quite early (8:30am the latest).

The friendliness of the staff, the beauty of the old wooden and tatami structure, the in-house onsen. The chef was on vacation while we were there - we knew that beforehand - so there were no meals served. We would love to return when the chef was working.

Ryokan are highly structured experiences with specific meal times, bath times, etc. This is not a bad thing, but something to be aware of.
-
Everything was incredible. Staff was so attentive and seemed to genuinely want to provide a magical experience.
-
Authenticity and staff It was the most expensive place we stayed our whole trip.

The staff were really accommodating and kind. They made sure to greet you and provide you with everything that you need. The breakfast was delicious and I really enjoyed it. For me, I was out late and there is just no way to get in if you're out past 11pm/12am. I suspect that's only an issue for me because I'm a solo traveler that's young, but something to note.

I loved the beautiful Japanese garden, comfortable sleeping pads, amazing breakfast and lovely hospitality. Google Maps sent me to the wrong side of the street so I didn’t find the place easily.

The traditional dinner was an incredible experience and the staff was so attentive. My husaband and I felt so lucky to have been able to stay! We hopefully will return someday.

The location and the staff were perfect. The ryokan was lovely. Tea service in room and private bath were so relaxing. It looked as if the ryokan had lovely spaces, but we were never shown how to access those other than public bath. Would have loved more access to explore other spaces, including garden.

I loved that I was able to experience living in a Japanese style home and how welcoming the staff was to make sure we enjoyed our stay.

The seevice and meals were fantastic

Excellent service from start to finish. The Ryokan was very beautiful and the location is perfect.

This felt very traditional and relaxing. The staff were very kind and helpful. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, delicious and beautifully presented! The onsen was able to be booked privately each evening of our stay. It was a wonderful experience! There was an odd odor in our bathroom that was not the smell of the wood in the ryokan.

Amazing! The highlight of our trip. This Ryokan is in the perfect location; about a 10 min walk from the river where there’s tons of restaurants and in the heart of Gion. The service was amazing. The experience was amazing. The 11 course dinner is a must, and one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. I wish we had stayed in Kyoto longer. The staff was very attentive and helped with anything we needed. The public bath was reservable and really cool to experience. The entire Ryokan smelled wonderful of wood and the rooms were beautiful. I recommend the room with the private bath which was made of wood and so deep and luxurious after a long day of walking. If anyone was visiting Japan I’d say staying here is the one thing you have to do. Such a cool experience I’ll never forget! I personally liked sleeping on the floor, however some people may not find it comfortable. This is part of the experience and if you’re unwilling to embrace it I’d recommend staying in a hotel rather then a Ryokan

We had a truly wonderful stay at Ryokan Motonago. From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed and cared for. The hospitality of the staff was exceptional—genuine, attentive, and full of thoughtfulness that made our experience so memorable. One of the highlights of our stay was the Japanese breakfast. It was beautifully prepared, with a variety of delicious and carefully arranged dishes that gave us a real taste of traditional Japanese cuisine. It was both a cultural experience and a culinary delight. The ryokan itself is charming and peaceful, offering the perfect blend of comfort and tradition. We left feeling rested, grateful, and eager to return someday. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kyoto who wants to experience authentic Japanese hospitality.

This was the most luxurious hotel experience I have ever had. Do it. The service and food is spectacular. The property is beautiful. Not everyone may like sitting on the floor for meals, but that is very common and traditional in Japan.

Wow! Not just a place to stay but an incredible experience
