The owner, Tony, was super friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable though the place was small. It was honestly such a beautiful and peaceful place. It was a little farther than I anticipated from the train station, but other than that everything was great.

Bed so comfy, lovely shared spaces. Loved the basket provided for the shower Only thing is there was not much space in the room, I had to bring my stuff down to the common area to pack in the morning. But that is not the hosts fault, it is the nature of having a remodeled a beautiful old house

Kitchen is a bit small for a long term stay but I was only there one night so no issues here. Must be able to climb up steep steps.

Clean and cozy guesthouse in the traditional Japanese style. The host, Toni, is great and has lots of recommendations for things to do in Kyoto

The communal area was very beautiful with a small garden attached. The showers were good. It’s a bit remote from things. I drove and parked nearby. From 5pm till 8:30am cost Y1,300. Beautiful building from the outside. American owner / manager - very detailed. There is a ledge you have to get over to get into bed. I nearly castrated myself on a few occasions. Mind your head on the stairs, I whacked mine twice. Sadly nobody used the communal area. I said good morning to one other guest. She waved me away with a grunt (Chinese?)

We had such a wonderful stay, it's a simple yet beautiful guesthouse, with everything you need and a few lovely surprises, including the cosy communal space and garden for relaxing after a long day exploring. We had everything we needed and Tony was an amazing host, all of his suggestions for activities, food and day trips ended up being the favourite elements of our trip and we met great people along the way!

A 100-140 year old house that has been converted into an inn. Absolutely stunning craftsmanship. Every detail so well thought. Tony is an incredible host. Super friendly and inviting. He provided wonderful local recommendations for local food, sights, bike rental etc. I am humbled by the generosity I have been shown. I hope to return here again someday. Thank you Tony + Staff of Kokonoe Machiya. …..

I have stayed in multiple 京町家 or renovated traditional Kyoto houses and this is by far the best one. Very friendly and professional owner who explains everything very thoroughly, neat interior design that impresses you the moment you walk in, clear instructions for everything, great facilities, beautiful back garden. This is how the 京町家 business should be done: with love and care instead of just buying off properties and letting someone else un-invested run it

Loved the decision and the modern details in this ancient house. Super friendly host.

I was very excited to stay in this facility and I paid more for a private room but I was quite disappointed with the experience. The picture on the site does not look like the room in real life. Unfortunately, the room I was given was extremely small (gomai sasa) and it was right next to the check in desk, the showers/bathroom and the community area. Not to mention the windows are made of paper which is traditional but I felt like I could hear everything from the inside and outside of the house. The room was dimly light also smelled weird and dusty. The mattress was not comfortable. There is only one wall plug. The host was nice enough but a bit too intense for me. I’ve stayed in nicer places for cheaper. Personally, I would not recommend to others.

One of the highlights of my stay in Kyoto. I had a warm welcome. The rules are explained to me very clearly. I had a personal locker, which was large. The bed was quite comfy too. The facilities are very clean, Owners are great people and good communicators. Please ask them about what to do/see/taste in Kyoto, since they are very knowledgeable about the topic. Will stay again the next time I am in Kyoto. Nothing specific
