The couple who ran the bed and breakfast like inn were warm and accommodating. Since you are staying in their home, it felt like you were staying with a great uncle. There was ample space for the four of us. The owner drove us to the train station in the morning and to lunch. Food is traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast that my family had a difficult time stomaching. Be prepared to be staying in someone’s home.

The dinner was an experience. Satoshi is an outstanding sushi chef and besides an incredible dinner and breakfast, we were treated to a comfortable room, bath, and a ride to the bamboo forest in the morning. It felt warm and welcoming and the entire family had a wonderful time.

I read that in a lifetime you only get to meet around 80,000 people. What I loved about this property is that it’s a home. It’s not a hotel or villa. It felt like a true authentic ryokan and experience from someone who does not travel much. The sushi was impeccable and one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life. In one night and day, I’ve tasted over 30 different dishes. Each carefully selected dish reflected what a Japanese person would eat. From puffer fish to seasonal sushi (fatty tuna made me tear up how good it was), and grilled fish to firefly squid. I’m not a drinker but the homemade Japanese plum wine Jell-O shot was pretty good. This is a highlight of my trip and will remember this for decades. Doing the math and booking a separate hotel and separate omakase would have been more expensive for two people. If you’re a fan of the Japanese culture and raw fish dishes it’s a 10/10. This area isn’t as close to train stations as other hotels. However we were able to take a bus. If you have a lot of luggage plan to utilize other transportation methods. I personally will budget a taxi if I get a chance to stay here again.

Such an incredible stay! If youre looking for an authentic Japanese accommodation, this is it! The home was beautiful, cozy, and super clean. We had dinner at the owners restauraunt twice while we were there and it was amazing. They were so kind and accomodating. They offered to take us to the bamboo forest one of our first mornings there and it was so nice to be there without the crowds. They were also so knowledgeable about the area and the history of Kyoto and gave us great recommendations for the area. Unfortunately we got sick mid stay, but this was honestly the perfect place to stay cozy and feel at home while under the weather. The owners offered us tea and were so helpful during this time. At the end of our stay they even dropped us back off at the train station! Truly amazing hosts. The location is in a pretty quiet part of town where there are less tourists. There is a beautiful temple nearby and many wonderful shops and restauraunts within a 15-20 minute walk. It felt very residential, safe, and quiet. Would absolutely recommend this stay and visit again! The owners do have 2 small dogs (which are very cute!) But if you are allergic it would be something to ask about:)

The hosts were amazing. A very sweet couple that went above and beyond!!!! We accidentally left my husband’s insulin in the refrigerator they called us and shipped it to us in Tokyo the next morning. The food was delicious and plentiful. They were fun to talk to and we enjoyed our time there very much. It was very quiet and we enjoyed reading our books together in the garden. Nothing it was wonderful

The hosts were really very good and the meals had options for japanese or european. Japanese meals were outstanding. We had whole unit to ourselves. Host was nice enough to give us tour of the bamboo forest. It was a bonus for us. The meals options for kids or ordering other than set meal would have been nice.

Don’t even think about it—just book! A very authentic place with excellent food. Only make a booking with dinner, you will have a chance to try the best Japanese food. Even if you think that you have tried everything, you will be surprised.

Our stay at Daitokuji Sushicho was one of the best experience we’ve had as a traveling family. First time in Japan and we land in this small family owned traditional ryokan out of the beaten path, in a lovely residential neighborhood. Our hosts were the nicest people you can find, immediately offering to take us to visit the area, cooking amazing diners and breakfasts for our little family, and accommodating when our kids got sick. The 120-year old home was perfect for us 6, adjacent to the family restaurant with a private dining area for us. Very nice short walk to the Daitikoji temple and the city bus stops, we were able to visit the city by bus and subway and stroll around the neighborhood. Staying at this ryokan made us enjoy Kyoto even more as we were not confined to the touristic areas and even though it was only 4 days we got to see a lot by traveling to/from this neighborhood. Everything was fantastic !

We stayed for four nights. The accommodation is lovely - a traditional Ryokan. The hosts are amazing, very friendly and helpful. They drove us to the centre of Kyoto and dropped us off at the station every morning. They didn't have to do that but it was much appreciated. They also took us to the Bamboo Forest before breakfast one day, which was lovely and tranquil and a change from the city. Both hosts could not have done more for us. The food was amazing - breakfast options were brilliant and we ate a couple of times in their restaurant which was a real treat. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a change from hotel accommodation.

The area is very nice, outside the crowds of Kyoto but close to many beautiful spots and temples. Also, The owners are very welcoming and helpful. We also liked the fact that is very authentic and private (I believe it is one or two rooms in total)

I had the perfect family stay at this charming hotel. My family and I were greeted warmly by a delightful Japanese couple who welcomed us into their beautifully preserved, hundred-year-old home. Their genuine hospitality made us feel right at home, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience that we will cherish for years to come. The culinary experience was outstanding. Every meal was a celebration of traditional Japanese cuisine—thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and crafted to delight both adults and children alike. It was clear that each detail was carefully considered to ensure an exceptional dining experience for the entire family. This hotel is truly a hidden gem for those seeking a blend of cultural immersion and family-friendly comfort. From the historic ambiance to the impeccable service and cozy accommodations, every aspect of our stay was curated to provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere for families of all sizes. I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel for any family looking for an enriching and memorable vacation. Our stay was nothing short of exceptional—100% recommended! A little far from downtown

The hosts were very welcoming and the premises were very clean. It was a very unique experience that many are not able to experience nowadays. The hosts provided dinner and breakfast at their restaurant next door which had a very comforting feeling and the presentation of the food was spectacular. The meal provided had a large display of food and many courses and while you ate and talked to the hosts, you really got to experience and understand their lives in Kyoto. 100% satisfied

Very warm hosts who provided us with comfortable lodging and everything we needed for our stay, and exceptional meals (dinner and breakfast) in a very private setting. Chef Satoshi san was a chef in Tokyo and his skills and hospitality are outstanding. My husband says it was one of the most, if not the most impressive and delicious meal he has ever had. The bath was also a treat. The nice couple helped us with a taxi and a warm send-off after a decadent and delicious breakfast. Unforgettable stay. We liked everything.

This ryokan was incredible, run by a retired couple. The husband was a chef in Tokyo for 33 years, and every morning made us the most amazing, gourmet breakfasts at the time requested. He even offered to drive us to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest early in the morning, walk us around, and drive us back for breakfast, but we'd already visited. The "room" you stay in is the only one available, and they offered us an upstairs bedroom that has three beds (and also has its own water closet and extra living room space), a kitchenette with a fridge and microwave, two rooms on the ground floor, and a bathroom with separate water closet and bathtub rooms. It was the most spacious stay we had in Japan, almost like having our own apartment. They also had a washer and dryer unit that was all-in-one (and also private use to us), so by the time we woke up, we had clean, dry clothes, which was very appreciated in the middle of our trip. There were plenty of heaters everywhere that we could adjust, so we never felt cold. The location is about 20 minutes to the nearest train station, so keep that in mind. The wife gave us a ride once, and they also gave us a ride to the Kyoto train station when we were heading to Tokyo, saving us cab fare, which was so nice of them. It was the costliest stay of our trip, which included Hyatt, Hilton, and another ryokan in Tokyo. But I think you get the best real Kyoto living experience, as the couple modeled the rooms most likely after how they live themselves. Their restaurant is next to the rooms, as well as their own living quarters. It was also the most spacious; we had a total of 4 rooms to ourselves, not including the bathroom and kitchenette.
