    Smells bad inside. Old building.

The staff member who greeted us had excellent English and made us feel very welcome. The onsen was very relaxing. We also used the private onsen once, which was fun with the toddler, although 45 minutes is a short time to relax. I prefer to spend a bit more time at the onsen even when I'm by myself. 3300 yen is still pretty affordable, though. The evening ice cream and night time beef soup snack were really nice. We were able to chat with another family one night, which was fun. (Americans like to talk to strangers) It may have been because we booked at the last minute, but the price seemed higher than if we had booked direct on the website. The breakfast we only so-so. It cost about 2500 yen per person per day at booking. We were glad we did not pay 5000 per person per day for the dinner, since we quickly tired of the breakfast, despite the dinner costing 7700 per person if not paid for at booking. Ultimately we did not try the dinner at the hotel due to the high cost and the mid quality of the breakfast. We enjoyed local dining, although I recommend asking the hotel to help you book a reservation if you don't speak Japanese.

THE BOOKING WEB SITE IS NOT CLEAR ABOUT WHAT RATE YOU WILL BE GETTING!! IF IT SHOWS DOUBLE OCCUPANCY PRICE, AND YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THREE ROOMS WITH TWO GUEST IN EACH ROOM, WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE GETTING. YOU JUST BOOKED THREE DOUBLE ROOMS FOR THREE OCCUPANTS NOT SIX. SO YOU GET CHARGED MORE WHEN YOU CHECK IN AT THE HOTEL EVEN IF YOU ASSUMED YOU HAD PAID IN ADVANCE FOR THREE ROOMS DOUBLE OCCUPANCY (SIX PEOPLE). AND WHEN YOU PREPAY BOOKING ALWAYS INCREASES THE COST OF THE ROOM WHEN YOU CONFIRM YOUR BOOKING. AND WHEN CANCEL YOU NEVER GET BACK THE ACTUAL COST EVEN IF YOU CANCEL IN LESS THAN THIRTY MINUTES OF BOOKING THE RESERVATION. THIS IS NOT THE BOOKING I STARTED USING FIVE YEARS AGO. HAD TO PAY MORE BECAUSE NUMBER OF GUEST DID NOT MATCH UP WITH THE ROOMS SELECTED EVEN THOUGH THE ROOMS WERE SELECTED ON THE WEB FOR THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF OCCUPANTS!!!

The staff was very nice at this hotel and the typical japanese room was an interesting experience!! I loved the little things the hotel did to make you feel taken care of such as providing free cold juice all day long, free ice cream in the afternoon and soup in the evening!! It did not have too many amenities and no direct access to the beach. It did not offer beach towels or rental of chairs, mats or beach umbrellas which made it a bit challenging for international tourists.

Location Old carpet at ground floor

Wonderful hot spring inside large natural cave. Buffet dinner and breakfast with plenty of good quality food and free wines & beer. For booking of this hotel, there should be a reminder that rented car are not allow to drive there directly and needed to park at their carpark far from the hotel ( and I have to ask at the pier where the car park is). They have shuttle mini-bus to take you and the luggage to hotel, or you can choose to stop at pier and take the funny turtle ferry. If I know before hand, it will save my time to drive to that carpark directly and pack a handy bag for one night instead of taking all our 4 person luggage with us to get on the minibus.

Excellent service by the staff who checked us in. And overall service as well was top notch. Other than the main entrance, this hotel is old and really needs some sprucing up. My room had cobwebs outside the window. And just looks old and worn. If I didn’t have to pay so much for it, I wouldn’t have mind. Location wise it’s a nice place to stay if one intends to be at Shirahama beach. Old and really could need a bit of renovating. There is only one lift serving the wing, so when it’s meal time, it gets quite hectic.

I stayed at Hanare Hototogisu 8th floor and the Wifi was very weak. Great if you want a digital detox, a little inconvenient if you wanted to get work done.

I liked its hot spring, and buffet breakfast and dinner. Staff are all very friendly. There are many local restaurants and convenient stores near the hotel. Also, a beautiful beach is in a walking distance, where I could enjoy a sunset. Don't stay Annex Building (Hanare). The room was clean and standard Japanese ryokan style, but the building is very old and far from the luxurious image of main entrance. We stayed the room of 8th floor, but we had to make a long trip with our big suitcases from the main entrance to our room by using two lifts, corridor and staris. (Google maps shows it takes about 3 min. from the hotel to our room). Also, this corridor is long, dark and cold. We needed to use this path each time to go to the hot spring or breakfast, which was the most unpleasant moment.

Good service. Onsens are clean and good. Room is very spacious and clean. Adventure world is not far from the hotel. Not easy to find the place. No restaurant is close by. Had to have dinner at the hotel, quite expensive.
