Great location, lovely friendly hosts and breakfast would definitely recommend.

The breakfast was superb every day!! The proprietor was pleasant, thought he was funnier than he really was.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed two nights at Portland House. Colin is a friendly, helpful, and happy host. He held down everything wonderfully while his wife was out of town. I can’t imagine the level of hospitality when they are both there! The room was large with a sitting area and the bed and sheets were very comfortable. I enjoyed the luxurious rain shower head, spacious shower, and great water pressure. The breakfast service was amazing and the portions were generous. The food is cooked to order based on your selections the night before and Colin was very accommodating about earlier breakfast times. The tables are set with proper linen tablecloths. My wife had salmon with some incredibly fluffy scrambled eggs; I had the hearty English Breakfast. Portland House offers complementary all day tea and coffee with an espresso/ cappuccino machine, shortbread cookies, and cakes. I loved the shortbread cookies so much I asked for the recipe which was graciously placed at my seat the next morning when I came to breakfast. Colin gave us great advice for day activities. His suggestions reflected the appropriate level of difficulty. We experienced some great views! Portland House is a great place to stay. Several of the guests that were there during our stay were return customers. This booking was a highlight of a 3-1/2 week trip through Great Britain.

I had a lovey stay at Portland house. The hosts Colin and Sarah were extremely kind and helpful, and the breakfast was delicious! I was in the single room which had everything I needed and was able to park right outside. I would fully recommend staying here.

The breakfast was as advertised ...a very impressive Cumbrian Breakfast with plenty of additional choices. Colin and Sarah wee perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble . Nothing was wrong'...except this annoying survey !

The full English breakfast was excellent Parking is difficult as only on street parking is available and is a busy residential street. Would book a 1st floor room next time for better privacy from the street - it wasn't apparent at the time of booking on booking.com.

Superb

Wonderful breakfast made each morning for each guest based on a menu checklist filled out the evening before. Host couple were very friendly. On street parking was very tight, so we avoided using car so we wouldn't lose our parking space during our stay. The the Host said there was a large convention in town that made parking worse than normal. Fortunately, the quaint downtown area was quite accessible by walking from Portland House.
