Key West Inn - Newport News

Staff, as always try their best. Unfortunately this property needs a lot of maintenance and it is long overdue for some new towels, sheets, comforters and some renovations. Understanding this is the Key West Inn and we were not expecting 5-star service or facilities, dingy towels/sheets take you back a little bit. Additionally, they advertise that breakfast is included, we did not get breakfast, we rang the bell several times and no one answered, when they finally answered, breakfast was not available/ready and it was already 8AM. They should advertise the breakfast hours to manage guest expectations. Location seemed very safe, a lot of lighting in the parking lot, and very conveniently located closed to many dining options and main freeway in the area.

But…… There was soap and lotion, but no shampoo. There was some mold in the shower where the tile meets the tub. Towels and washcloth were very thin, and stained. There was long hair folded into the washcloth. Not mine - I’m bald. The shower curtain is mounted too far in. You can’t not touch it while taking a shower. The rod should be remounted 5” farther out, at the edge of the tile.

The rooms look like the kind of place that charge by the hour. There were open wires hanging out the missing fire detector connection. Drawer knobs were missing from 3 of the 6 dresser drawers. There were open holes in the wall by the sink. The room stank so bad, I wore a face mask every second I was in there. I chose KeyWest Inn because it was inexpensive and 5 minutes from my conference. When I checked in, the loby was clean and very well decorated so I mistakenly thought I made a good choice. The receptionist told me that my non-smoking room was on the second floor and that there was no elevator. I said I cant carry all my luggage up a flight of narrow stairs. She said the only available room on the first level is a smoking room. My last minute options were too expensive or to far away so I accepted the smoking room.

They have a one-way parking lot and the room smelled a little of smoke after arriving but it was excellent at serving its purpose as a rest-stop for a night of traveling, rather than driving sleepy to returning home. Our batteries to our room’s remote died two hours after arrival but we just manually pressed the buttons for the night, the bathroom door in our room also had a hole in it but it was nearly undetectable upon arrival. The morning associates of this motel are heavy handed too, the wake up call scared me out of my sleep but the air conditioning worked, the shower, toilet, sink, refrigerator, plus all lights worked and we were able to rest. It purpose was served nicely.

The AC did not work the whole night, and it was a terrible experience. I called frontdesk, and they kept saying it would turn on, but it never did.

A good value for the money. I was pleased overall. There was some painting needed on a wall in the room, but otherwise very clean.
