The staff were all very friendly and attentive throughout our stay! The rooms had modern finishings and old world charm with AC that kept us cool mid-summer. The onsen was beautiful, clean, and restorative. The location was near many transit stops and walkable to so many great shops and restaurants. I highly recommend this place and would stay here again! Nothing. I enjoyed it all!

Beautiful Japanese feel.

I really liked the Japanese-style room with the tatami floor; it was a good size, and so was the bathroom. The staff was super polite and always available, and we loved the cute decorations for our honeymoon. When we got there, there were some treats waiting for us, but they weren't refilled on the other days, which I think would've been a nice touch. For breakfast, you can choose between Asian (a bento box you need to order by 4 PM the day before) or Western style. The hotel is in a convenient spot and has a sauna and a bath/gym. Good price/value. The western breakfast was the same every day, which got old since we stayed multiple nights. The bento box was alright, but I wish they made it there. The room windows have privacy covers, which I get why they're there, but it makes it feel a bit cramped.

I really liked the public baths and the bathroom in the room itself was great with the shower and the bath and the toilet and a large TV and a comfortable bed. The public baths are really the highlight of this place. I didn't like that the windows in the room were permanently sealed and pretty much aimed at a wall. That's the only thing I didn't like. Everything else was honestly perfect and the booking is forcing me to write more sentences

Fantastic hotel for a 5-day stay in Kyoto. We booked an executive suite with sofa bed for a family of 3 and it was quite spacious, with the sofa bed outside the main bedroom. The double bed was two twins pushed together, and thus is rather large. The rooms have tatami mat floors, sliding paper window shades, and there is a nice communal bath in the basement - a hotel but with a ryokan feel. The hotel is less than a year old (completed Sep. 2025 if I understood correctly) and it's exceptionally clean. Would stay here again. This didn't bother us but the room ceilings are fairly low (I am guessing maybe 6'7" or so, or 2m). It may feel a bit tight for very tall people.

Loved the room, bed, onsen, and service. A tremendous value in a great location in an amazing city.

The room felt traditional, yet modern. It was very clean, spacious, and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially stepping in to help us book an excursion, as we had a language barrier with the company. It was a great location for walking around the area we were in but it's a bit far from the train station (about a 15 min walk) so going to other areas was a bit more difficult.

The breakfast provided a wide selection of both Western and Eastern foods, and there was also a menu for the chef to cook fresh for you! It was an excellent and convenient option, especially before heading out to sightsee for hours! The wait staff was very attentive, polite, and welcoming. No complaints! Everything was excellent! I will stay here again on my future visits to Kyoto!

Staff were friendly and very helpful. Property was meticulous. Amenties and special touches like a snack box, array of different teas and coffees, pour over and kettle, as well as charming pajamas that matched the vibe were great. Location was a bit away from the Kyoto or closest train station and pontocho for quick hops to the busy main areas of Kawaramachi but we came to love the small proprietor not famous spots that don’t pop up on Google Maps, like the Michelin Ramen Mencha, Pizzeria Brown Blossom, and many cute coffee and mochi shops around. Wish we had more days to wander. Did not have any laundry facilities. Japanese breakfast was bento boxes. Don’t get the black cod, it was small and disappointing. Beef was a gyudon/sukiyaki it seems and daughter liked it. Restaurant Arbitin downstairs had a per person cover charge and perhaps the most expensive meal we had while in Kyoto. Steak underdone and onion soup was an applesauce mash with little broth. 3rd bed was very uncomfortable — the pillow top put onto a sofa bed was hard on the back and left us without anywhere to sit during the day.

Yūgen Kyoto Shijo makes a strong first impression with its calm, traditional atmosphere, where the tatami mats underfoot ground the whole space in an authentic Japanese feel. The room is clean and uncluttered, giving it a serene, well kept vibe that's easy to settle into. If you're after a setting with genuine warmth and a quiet sense of refinement, the ambiance here delivers. My only small wish would have been a shared bathing option, the public bath and sauna are separated by gender, so my partner and I couldn't enjoy them together.

Facilities and service was excellent. The entire place was super clean and the rooms had everything we needed. It really superseded my expectations. The spa was out of service, but the personnel noticed us in advanced and apologized for the inconvenience. But we enjoyed the Onzen which was super nice.
