The location and staff. Gym too small, low ceilings and not a 5 star standard.

We chose St Moritz for the final stay of our New Zealand trip and decided to splurge, expecting the five-star luxury experience the hotel proudly markets itself as offering. Unfortunately, it fell well short of that standard. Before we arrived, we let the hotel know we’d be getting there about an hour before the standard check-in time and asked if an early check-in might be possible. We completely understood it would depend on availability. When we arrived, we were told our room wasn’t quite ready, but the receptionist said she’d call or WhatsApp us as soon as it became available. We headed out, then returned about 30 minutes later to organise parking, only for another staff member to tell us the room had actually been ready. We never received the promised call or message, nor any acknowledgement that our room was available. It was a small thing, but it set the tone for the rest of the stay. The room itself lacked basic features I’d expect in a luxury hotel, especially in a winter destination. There was no rainfall shower - just a cheap handheld shower head that constantly twisted and sprayed water outside the shower. There were no heated towel rails or heated bathroom floors, leaving towels damp overnight and still wet for the next morning’s shower. The doonas were also surprisingly thin and too small for the bed, making the room feel anything but luxurious. Breakfast was another disappointment. We were told barista coffee was included, only to then find out it wasn’t. The buffet selection was very small, items weren’t replenished (including the Pana Chocolate), and overall it didn’t resemble the breakfast offering you’d expect from a five-star hotel. Cleanliness was also lacking. I accidentally dropped my toothbrush on the bathroom floor and was shocked at how filthy it was. Housekeeping trolleys sat in the corridors throughout the day, and the hallways themselves looked tired and dirty. Parking was another issue.
