Overall good

We had problems with the keys and there wasn’t anyone around to help us. The actual contactless check in was easy and we were even upgraded to a suite. Nice staff, they communicated very well. There’s really NO amenities at the hotel but water, ice and coffee. No food available, but it’s conventionally located near many eateries. Overall, I give this facility a solid “C.”

The hardest part was finding the hotel entrance. Google Maps showed that I was right in front of the hotel, but all the signage seemed to indicate that the property was a wedding venue. I was very confused. I eventually rang the doorbell, but no one answered, so I called the hotel. Someone answered and said, “Just a moment.” After a couple more minutes, the door buzzed and I was allowed inside. Once inside, the staff was very nice and accommodating. They allowed me to check in early, which I appreciated. I was told the room was not completely ready and that someone would return with fresh towels. About 30 minutes later, while I was getting out of the shower, a staff member came to finish making the bed and refresh the towels. I appreciated that they followed through, although there were already towels in the bathroom that I was using. I also noticed a small leak under the bathroom sink that I could not stop. The Jacuzzi-style bathtub looked like it hadn’t been updated in decades, with visible cracks in the plastic, so I was uncomfortable turning on the Jacuzzi. The next morning, there was no one at the front desk to assist me. Overall, the staff was friendly, but the difficult entrance, bathroom issues, and lack of front-desk assistance made the stay less comfortable than expected.

Despite being told we could check in early because we were part of a wedding party, when we arrived at 2:30pm we were told there was no body to clean the room. We had to leave the wedding after it had started to come upstairs to check in after 4pm. I got several flea bites in our room and was not comfortable taking a shower in the cracked jacuzzi tub. I'm so disappointed that I wasted my one key credits on this property.

I stayed at the Sterling Hotel for one night. I stayed in the deluxe queen room. My room was at best decent. The room was in need of a better cleaning, better decor, had some chips and dents, the TV didn't have anything to access to watch anything, staff isn't around after 4pm, and I think that they can do better! I couldn't get the jet on the Jacuzzi tub to turn on and I texted the number that was given and got no response. They didn't acknowledge my text at all during my stay. It would be helpful if staff was available for at least a few hours during the evening time to help customers. When I checked in they should have included instructions on the Jacuzzi tub. They say that they are operating like a bed and breakfast when there is NO breakfast. Coffee was available in the lobby and in the room. I think they could have spared a few more k-cups for the Keurig and I had to go down to the lobby to get more coffee. They could have included sugar too! I also think they should have included a lamented sheet or binder of restaurants and things to do nearby. It would have made my stay easier to navigate. I'm disappointed in the lack of service. I really believe that they can do better!!!

The front desk closes at 4:30pm. I was locked out with no way to access my room. The security guard wouldn’t help and it took over half an hour of making calls and emailing until the emergency line texted me and gave me a lock box number and code.

The bathtub.... I almost drowned in the best possible way

The room was great. The overall stay was great. My family and I stayed here for two nights and attended a wedding reception downstairs which was very convenient. The only issue with this property is that there is no free parking. If you stay here, be ready to pay the meter daily or pay at the garage down the street. Otherwise, the property is fine.

Me and my husband got locked out of the hotel in the middle of the night and there is no staffing at all until another guest showed up and found a key in a lock box and open door for us. Then inside the room was even more horrifying, the bedroom was so dirty, the bathroom had mold in it. The shower had a crack and rust. We booked for two nights. But we ended up leaving the next day. We tried to speak to anyone from the staff in the lobby the day after. But of course no one was there so we took some pictures and we left and booked another place. We tried contacting Expedia for a refund and they also could not reach out to the property so we could not get a refund. They offered us 150 key cash from their end but nothing from this terrible place. Please do not make our mistake and book in this place if you do not want to ruin your trip.

Our room was huge. A queen bed, sitting area by the big windows, a desk, tv and quiet air conditioning. The bathroom was also large but the old jacuzzi tub/shower had seen better days. We had a quiet night and were able to have time in the morning to explore. Note there is no parking included. There is lots of metered parking. Free street parking nearby is 10p-8a, midnight-8am. Secure monitored lots are $30 overnight. Also there is not a person at the front desk 24/7, but just a call away. There is no pool. Do stay here if you are in town.

Great location to the convention center. Was here for a conference and it was just a short walk. I liked being off the main conference street and able to get to coffee and food nearby. Safe hotel with friendly staff. It is older and it shows, but it is clean and a unique place with the architecture and Victorian vibe. Would definitely stay here again!

The staff was friendly and responsive!

There was minimal staff help, we only got keys from the staff and then no one was there. no breakfast was offered, coffee and water were available. Sterling hotel was not easily found, you have to search the wedding place which was their main purpose. I won't stay there next time.

Valerie at the front desk was awesome! She was helpful and friendly. Our check-in time was 3pm. We were coming from about 1 1/2 hrs away. We were already set to arrive at 3pm. We got a message that our room would not be ready at 3 pm while on freeway. So we couldn't do anything. We arrived at 3 pm. We had to wait until after 4:30 to get our room. Sitting in the hotel lobby. The wedding we were attending started at 5 pm. We barely had time to get ready for it. Valerie was very apologetic. That didn't help us though.

Unfortunately the room was not very clean. There was hair all over the bathroom, and the room itself was just run down. The sheets seemed clean but the bed was sagging completely on one side. I kept my socks on while walking around the room and they got yellow on the soles. I had a very difficult time sleeping because a water heater or pipes were clanging very loudly all night long. I understand this is not a major chain hotel but a quiet and clean place to rest is not unreasonable especially at this price.

I come to Sacramento quite a bit for work and while there are plenty of hotels in the depths of downtown and along the Sacramento waterfront there are not a whole lot of options near the Capital and other state agency building. The Sterling is AWESOME for an affordable boutique stay in a very walkable and lovely part of town where accommodations are limited. I plan on making this my regular spot to stay when I'm in Sacramento.
