This Ryokan is a bit outside of the main city center, which can be a plus or a minus depending on your preferences, for me it was a plus. It has nice roomy rooms with private onsens (the apex of comfort), as well as public and family onsens on the premises. The staff is very nice and helpful. I would definitely go back. If you don't like to walk, it might be a bit far from the main attractions of the town. Also, there is no restaurant on the Ryokan, and no restaurant or shop really close by, but in my opinion, it was not a big issue.

The road to the Ryokan is very tight for drivers. Its inaccessible for people with big cars or nervous drivers.

Classic Japanese style Ryokan. Good location to walk into town, ample parking provided.

This was a solid ryokan and the private bath was profits best part. It was large enough for 2 and the space was private and cozy. Breakfast was good. Room was also nicely laid out and good.

Staff was friendly and the hotel was very clean. I chose this hotel based on their onsen facilities and these were disappointing. Looking back at the pictures again i realize that the shots make everything look bigger and nicer. In reality, there are 2 private baths that anybody can use -- one indoor and one outdoor. the outdoor bath is lovely but it is not set in a huge space. the public women/men baths are both indoor and pretty much face a wall. there is a bit of a garden but it is all very very small, much smaller than a public bath in a typical onsen hotel. same goes for the private bath in our room (not to be confused with private baths that all visitors can use). it was both lovely and very tight at the same time. so relative to other onsen hotels we have been on our trip (and we stayed in an onsen hotel every single night of the trip) this was a disappointing one.

Everything. Staff is really nice. They picked us up and dropped us off at the train station. The onsen experience was really amazing. They provided all the amenities and the space was very clean. The room is spacious with the garden view. Breakfast is also really good we can tell that they selected the best ingredients. The price is high but compared to the value given, it’s worth it! I would recommend anyone who wants to spend a night in Yufuin to stay at Hananomai.

We had a delightful stay at Yufuin Onsen Ryokan Hananomai. The ryokan is in a central, yet quiet part of Yufuin. The main sights were all assessible by walking, although there is parking available if you have a car. We were warmly greeted by the hosts upon arrival and taken to a very spacious and comfortable room with a private onsen. The facility was very clean, the breakfasts were different and delicious each day and we really loved our stay. Upon leaving, we let the host know we would need a taxi to the train station. To our surprise, he drove us himself and helped us with our bags. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Yufuin. Nothing, everything was perfect

Staff were lovely and the room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was really great. The whole ambiance was excellent. Very quiet and peaceful. The futon beds were a little hard. An extra futon would have been great.

We got the large room which was comfortable. Free shuttle service to/from train station was very helpful. Breakfast was great. A bit out of the way if you’re walking back at night. Room and hot tubs felt a bit outdated. The private family hot tubs should have reservations so we can all try it out. No dinner option anymore but we didn’t mind eating in town.

This is a well run family establishment with beautiful Onsens. The food was delicious and other than the really hard beds and small flat pillow (typical for Japan) it was great. Beds and small flat pillow…but we’re from Canada and are not used to this sleeping style.

The property was lovely and in a great location just a short walk from the train station and main attractions on a peaceful side street. The main attraction is the onsens and they had four separate baths, one male bath, one female bath, and two private family baths that could be used by a group without additional charge. The hotel only has a small number of rooms which was a pleasant surprise, even in the non-private baths we felt like we had the place to ourselves. The family baths are perfect if anyone in your group has tattoos as that typically prevents you from using the same public onsens. We booked the family room for our group of 5 and it was spacious with an additional private outdoor bath. The property doesn’t serve meals, which wasn’t a problem for us but is something to note.
